How Sin Becomes Outdated

Category: Religion and Philosophy

The more modern definition of sin really should be any action or habit that is a detriment to your life and others.  In ancient times, the infant mortality rate was high and life expectancy was a fraction of what it is now.  So given proper historical context, it's almost reasonable that any sexual behavior other than that used strictly for breeding would be deemed as "sinful."  Ancient societies ... » Continue Reading

Virtue of Skepticism

Category: Books and Stories

"The difference between physics and metaphysics...is that the metaphysicist has no laboratory." - Carl Sagan in The Demon-Haunted World. (p 37) I really like this book so far - its an almost sacred testament to the philosophy of agnosticism.  It's a much kinder approach to expelling superstitious thought without being overly aggressive like a lot of snide atheist literature out there.  Instead of ... » Continue Reading

On Carl Sagan's The Demon-Haunted World

Category: Books and Stories

I'm reading Carl Sagan's The Demon-Haunted World.  It's a gentle reminder of the importance of science to the improved quality of life of people, and a necessary one in the face of the perils of dangerous ignorance like faith-healing, anti-vaxx, etc.  Only 15 pages in and it has made a point to criticize pseudoscience and all ideas seeking to explain the unknowns of the world without evidence. He ... » Continue Reading

Journey of Strength [Part 3]

Category: Life

This will be the third part of my coming out story, and will be written in a way to be readable out of order. Names will be replaced by ridiculous alternatives. At 18, I had just become closer friends with a guy 15ish+ my age named Cat, a nerdy genius with an affinity for cats, old sci-fi, and being the number one Halloween house on his neighborhood block with his custom-built oddities around his ... » Continue Reading

Journey of Guidance [Part 2]

Category: Life

This will be the second part of my coming out story, though it could be read out of order. --- I was about 17 and in the middle of a fencing spar with my older friend, I'll call Cat.  It was during this time we were practicing for the light combat games in the SCA, but that's another story. After the matches were done, something compelled me to confide in Cat. "So, I think I'm bi" I said abruptly,... » Continue Reading

Journey of Realization [Part 1]

Category: Life

This will be part one of my coming out story.  I've been asked a few times, and its not right to reduce it to a single moment ; the whole process of self-acceptance and growth is equally if not more important.  Names will be replaced while this remains public. I knew something was different after watching Jeremy Sumpter in the 2003 Peter Pan movie in theaters. I'm around his age. I had never felt ... » Continue Reading

Magic

Category: Religion and Philosophy

The purpose of magic, outside of the theatrical variety, has always been to achieve a desired something through words, an intention, and an action.  These three things don't directly result in the achieving of what's desired, but are more like a call to it and, when used properly, empower the individual to achieve what they wish. Prayer, spellwork, and even simple statements of gratitude I would d... » Continue Reading

Coffee

Category: Food and Restaurants

The first time I tried it felt like drinking dirt and I didn't understand it at all. Adding creamer or sugar helped to take away some of the bitterness, but even then it still wasn't enough to make me desire the stuff. Now I have it down to an art. Between two people, I make 6-8 cups of half-caf ( it can't be bought as half-caf ; its taken from two separate containers, one decaf one regular ).  An... » Continue Reading

Light and Dark

Category: Religion and Philosophy

I watched a video the other day of someone who called themself an Ex-Satanist and how they came to return to Christianity. He described his then-friends as witches, pagans, Satanists, etc.  He described himself as being discontent with his spiritual path, and holding on to an unhealthy resentment "against God." He then spent a week around a Christian crowd, initially because he had to as he was wi... » Continue Reading
