what to do about this kind of abandoned area

Category: Blogging

Need to get some thoughts out in a concrete way before I can focus on doing homework.  There's this little area of native plants that have been mostly stuck in the ground and then left to fend for themselves. I've mentioned it before. Recently learned I someone at the nearby garden would like to take them out and put a fruit tree in instead. I see the value of a fruit tree but I really feel like o... » Continue Reading

Summer Scrambles (distinct and different from Spring Scrambles)

Category: Blogging

It's summer! I am trying to fight the weird defiance of being seen that keeps me from documenting things. Am I winning? Hard to say. Some part of my brain was a wild rabbit once I think or a small brown bird in the hedges.  A better gardener than I mapped off months of summer planting as 'take a nap' and yet here I am!! Germinating more green beans! Incorrigible!  Why I am germinating more green b... » Continue Reading

Magnolia question

Category: Blogging

This is something I've been wondering for years now and I want to write it down somewhere so I can remember to come back to it - How do magnolias, especially their annual dump of magnolia leaves, interact with native California gardens? The magnolia in question is native to the Southern states of North America.  The leaves are thick, PLENTIFUL, and slow to break down. For a long time I've been won... » Continue Reading

Green Beans. the Beangining (again, again, again) + wildflower results and plans

Category: Blogging

It feels wonderful to stand vaguely outside today and as usually my brain is shedding ideas FAST so let's see if I can remember everything that's been happening.  The green beans that I put in wet paper towel to germinate did just that in probably.. 2 days? And then I put them in little pots on Monday (6/2). The next day one of them sprouted and today there are about three more raising their heads... » Continue Reading

Tomatoes Update (and other things)

Category: Blogging

I took out the peas today and got 3 more tomato plants - they will go in tomorrow (5/30 - the first group went in on 5/9). There's also a very small volunteer tomato that I may just leave because I am kind of curious about what the fruit will be like.  The pea removal required a lot of untangling and cleaning. It was very powdery mildew coated. Other small things - using up my weird cardboard 6 pa... » Continue Reading

Beans Round 2 and really just a lot of whacking

Category: Blogging

Well, put a second round of beans in the community college plot on... uhh,.. lemme see.. 5/14? My class ended, I had a few days of work, I might be back in the limbo zone. Mysterious stuff.  The beans were from M Garden, 2024, there were 15, and I was told they were Rattlesnake beans which was a little confusing to me because I always thought those were different colors. But the pods were green an... » Continue Reading

Soft Updates

Category: Blogging

Updates on a few different things that I have been observing and just a few things I have done recently,  BEANS. They are coming up, slowly. In a way it hasn't been that long. I've got two so far and I think they are the purple ones. Luckily I have a lot of backups in case these don't germinate. I could start them in a 6 pack if I wanted. Snap Peas Doing good, the ones in the ground are happier, s... » Continue Reading

rainy morning

Category: Blogging

Quick update - it's raining so I got out and shoveled the compost into different pots & beds. Tried to get out before but ended up out there with an umbrella and raincoat and muddy slides.  The california natives didn't get compost & seem to be quite happy without so far so that's good. Some things sprouting but I don't want to say what they are and jinx it because it feels so delicate right now.  » Continue Reading

Beans in the Ground

Category: Blogging

Put the beans in the ground. This year I have a bonkers variety of green beans I collected. I would say idk how this happened but I know. It was me. I collect dried beans like a squirrel. Overall I planted about 20-25 I'd guess in the cc garden plot. Soaked overnight -> planted in ground with color coded markers -> deeply watered. The ground had been retaining water well so I'm.. cautiously optimi... » Continue Reading

Grafting part 2 + sprinklers

Category: Blogging

I grafted the three Hass scions today! I had to put them in the fridge when I got them (probably that was the 17th?) because I was busy so I'm a bit concerned about the viability but they looked to be in pretty good shape. As opposed to the Mexicola Grande scions that came trimmed & wrapped, these were Just Cuttings with all the leaves attached and everything so I needed to do that part too. Which... » Continue Reading

Grafting part 1 & a mallow update

Category: Blogging

4/16/2025 - FIRST AVOCADO SCIONS GRAFTED! I actually got 2 Mexicola Grande ?? Either the seller was feeling generous or I wasn't paying very good attention to what I was doing but either way, nice! I grafted both of these onto my neighbors avocado tree, which is a big tree but not much interested in making fruit that is nice to eat. I had to use a ladder.  Tomorrow I will be busy BUT in the mornin... » Continue Reading

Finally: Sprinklers and avocados and swearing

Category: Blogging

Fucking FINALLY investigated the ding dang sprinkler! It's drip irrigation and a few inches underground in some areas so I was digging and then just kinda following it under the buckwheat with my fingers to see if I could find a turn or an elbow which wouldn't be so bad if our dirt wasn't HARD as FUCK!! It's really very rocky in a way where there's not a ton of big rocks but it's clear that the gr... » Continue Reading
