It feels wonderful to stand vaguely outside today and as usually my brain is shedding ideas FAST so let's see if I can remember everything that's been happening.
The green beans that I put in wet paper towel to germinate did just that in probably.. 2 days? And then I put them in little pots on Monday (6/2). The next day one of them sprouted and today there are about three more raising their heads out of the dirt. It's going FAST. Good to know that my technique was right, I was just suffering from old seeds. In all, this process probably took a bit under a week?
I planted the biggest snake melon (cotleydon + two true leaves + lots of roots) in the cc plot yesterday (6/3), and I also helped plant & weed a native plant area on the campus. I'm going to need poles for the (2) green bean plants in the ground there soon.
Talked to folks who take care of native plant area, and I asked them if they put out wildflowers. They said no, that that's not really what businesses are looking for/it's harder to convince corporate or city entities that wildflowers aren't just like a little temporary thing with no broader implications, but that they're happy to see things come up. So, might help them out with that, come rainy season.
Speaking of wildflowers, last Wednesday (5/28) I saw an area of desert bluebells (Phacelia somethingorother) and California poppies along the bike path near the animal shelter... ;-)
I also adopted a small, very battered, oak tree from the native plant zone near the park learning garden. I don't think they'll be allowed to grow to fruition there so I'm tentatively starting the process of moving them out to other areas where they will be allowed to fully grow. Mayyybe someday we'll have scrub jays and oak titmice back in the canopies again.
ok now that I've forced myself to sit I am drifting off so I need to get up so I can keep moving around to keep the body awake. Yes like a shark (no not like a shark). Adios
