Quick update - it's raining so I got out and shoveled the compost into different pots & beds. Tried to get out before but ended up out there with an umbrella and raincoat and muddy slides. The california natives didn't get compost & seem to be quite happy without so far so that's good. Some things sprouting but I don't want to say what they are and jinx it because it feels so delicate right now. » Continue Reading
Put the beans in the ground. This year I have a bonkers variety of green beans I collected. I would say idk how this happened but I know. It was me. I collect dried beans like a squirrel. Overall I planted about 20-25 I'd guess in the cc garden plot. Soaked overnight -> planted in ground with color coded markers -> deeply watered. The ground had been retaining water well so I'm.. cautiously optimi... » Continue Reading
I grafted the three Hass scions today! I had to put them in the fridge when I got them (probably that was the 17th?) because I was busy so I'm a bit concerned about the viability but they looked to be in pretty good shape. As opposed to the Mexicola Grande scions that came trimmed & wrapped, these were Just Cuttings with all the leaves attached and everything so I needed to do that part too. Which... » Continue Reading
4/16/2025 - FIRST AVOCADO SCIONS GRAFTED! I actually got 2 Mexicola Grande ?? Either the seller was feeling generous or I wasn't paying very good attention to what I was doing but either way, nice! I grafted both of these onto my neighbors avocado tree, which is a big tree but not much interested in making fruit that is nice to eat. I had to use a ladder. Tomorrow I will be busy BUT in the mornin... » Continue Reading
Fucking FINALLY investigated the ding dang sprinkler! It's drip irrigation and a few inches underground in some areas so I was digging and then just kinda following it under the buckwheat with my fingers to see if I could find a turn or an elbow which wouldn't be so bad if our dirt wasn't HARD as FUCK!! It's really very rocky in a way where there's not a ton of big rocks but it's clear that the gr... » Continue Reading

Making notes on what was done recently. I moved the very tiny tiny delicate mallow to a deeper (still VERY small) pot that drains better. I'm still not sure if it'll survive. Then I planted a six pack with bladderpods, one seed per 4 of them and two seeds per the last 2. I tried to record the soil mix, it says on my phone: 3 parts weird dg mix from walking path, 2 parts orchid potting mix, 1 part ... » Continue Reading
I've been thinking about taking care of this area in the park more seriously lately. It's an area that was planted next to a food garden to have native plants but there hasn't been a lot of followthrough in terms of care. There's a lot of issues with weeds and it's kind of hard to tell if there used to be more things or if there's irrigation or what. Weed issues, in brief: lot of nonnative grasse... » Continue Reading
There is a chance I'll use this. To be honest, it's a small chance because I don't love being looked at (and admitting it less, haha) and that makes social media difficult for me. I'm trying to think of reasons why this could be useful. Maybe this can be helpful to other people who are growing plants or are interested in learning about the natural world around them? » Continue Reading
