Things that cripple my computer

Category: Games

Yes, things can cripple my rig Exhibit A: Local LLM hosting While I do generally use this thing for gaming, and virtualization, LLM's will absolutely trash this rig like no other. I guess I gotta get 256 gb of ram now huh » Continue Reading

Today I am tasked with caring for a family friend's dog. Folks who have added me are aware that I have an excess of overclocking hardware, not unlike a project car. The dog comes into play I swear as im there at the house for about 5 days, and since its about a 30 minute drive, Im not about to drive back and forth. The motherboard, cpu and ram are as follows: X99 oc formula I7 5960X OC to 4.1 ghz ... » Continue Reading

Going further back in time

Category: Games

I have something special, an OG Rampage Formula X48 from 2008. I dont have an appropriate cooler for the Q6600 yet, but I have modded GTX 980 drivers to work with windows XP. This will be quite the adventure. It already has insulation around the cpu socket for liquid nitrogen cooling to prevent condensation from seeping around important components. It has some weird bios issue that I need to sort ... » Continue Reading

Yet more hwbot entries

Category: Games

In the spirit of more hardware addiction, I have acquired an X58 sniper that came with a I7 990X as an added bonus for a bargain bin price since the seller apparently forgot it was in the motherboard. Suffice to say, I immediately started my usual. I was able to get to 4.35 ghz with a 133 mhz bclk, and push an absurd 1800 mhz on my memory, which is quite high for the platform. The 990X has a poten... » Continue Reading

Upgrades

Category: Games

I swapped out my case from the 4000D airflow to O11 evo since I have a 360mm rad that would not fit on the top of the 4000D, so I had to put it in the front, blocking off all airflow and choking off my GPU. I was running without a side panel for a while now. O11D is better, but I still need more fans on the bottom. The Al120 v2 fans are great but the software sucks ass... My pc specs are on my ste... » Continue Reading

I7 3960X results

Category: Games

I believe that this CPU is a golden sample. 4.9 Ghz on 1.4v is amazing. I am also under the impression that the motherboard is helping out too, as I am one of the few people clocking sandy bridge E this high with an X79 big bang Xpower II, everyone else is using the rampage 4 extremes. I am also fully under the impression that this cpu is 5 ghz ca » Continue Reading

I7 3960X intial results

Category: Games

Yeah, Im not sure how I feel about this one, my decently overclocked 3960x is pushing physics scores close to that of my 7800x, a processor released 6 years after it, and beating it in the combined score. I might pit them head to head in a more standard fashion, but X79 for daily use is still acceptable, albeit long in the tooth. Obvious benefits of X2 » Continue Reading

More 3930k oc shenanagins

Category: Games

Today I ended up sniping some 3dmark scores from other 3930k users. I had a secret weapon up my sleeve that helped me make up ground from my clock speed disadvantage that I had from a now decently degraded cpu. it honestly felt kind of cheap doing this, but whatever, a score is a score, regardless of how its done » Continue Reading

Overclocking the beast

Category: Games

I finally got a quad channel kit of 16GB Ballistix DDR3 for my motherboard as i was at a disadvantage using dual channel the first go around. The 3930k, specifically the sandy bridge-e architecture can clock memory, even trashy kits like a banshee, but I think I degraded it from my extremely excessive clocks from my first set of tries. I was able to push my 1866 MHz rated kit to 2133. I’ll try to ... » Continue Reading

My next overclocking project

Category: Games

7800x was a bust, at least until I feel like delidding the chip, to maybe get a bit more headroom. My next plan is to revisit the old monster lying in the bottom of my cabinet This is the X79 big bang xpower II, one of the most special boards I have in my fairly decent collection. I have it paired with an I7 3930k. Last time, I was able to push it to 5.1 ghz, from its stock speed of 3.8 ghz. » Continue Reading

Overclocking: the results

Category: Games

I was right in thinking that my 7800X had lousy silicon quality. While I was able to push clock speeds from the stock 3.5 ghz to 4.8 ghz, it took a huge amount of voltage (1.32v) which resulted in less than stellar temps. Also, the mesh was horrific, and would not push beyond 3.2 ghz. Nonetheless I was able to steal 3rd place in 7zip » Continue Reading

Overclocking prep

Category: Games

Tonight will be the first time ill attempt to take some positions on hwbot with my 7800x. I have some good experience with overclocking X299, but im unsure how high I can get it since the silicon quality on this chip is not great. I havent posted a score on hwbot for a couple years so we'll see if the cold air can assist me. The rampage VI extreme is a good board, but the VRM can get a bit toasty ... » Continue Reading
