Epistulae Morales ad Lucilium Letters 56-65

Category: Religion and Philosophy

Letter 56. On Quiet and Study - I am not distracted by outside noises any longer. - Words are harder to ignore, but it's still doable. - If the outside seems loud it is because something inside isn't quiet - Only reason ear stop the noise - However it is easier to just move away from the noise - But I still test myself Letter 57. On the Trials of Travel. - Some brave men fear the hurt of others mo... » Continue Reading

Epistulae Morales ad Lucilium Letters 31-55

Category: Religion and Philosophy

Letter 31. On Siren Songs - The "song" you must fear comes from every side - every quarter of the world. - Sail past all cities not only the one you mistrust - Work is not good. Scorning work is good. But work towards an honourable goal is good - Good is the knowledge of things. Evil is the lack of knowledge of things. - "Bad" sort of work still displays the spirit. - Your money won't place you on... » Continue Reading

Epistulae Morales ad Lucilium Letters 16-30

Letter 16. On Philosophy, the Guide of Life. 1. - When our wisdom is complete -> happy life - but even when our wisdom's only begun our life is much happier - You must reflect on these ideas daily and strengthen them 2. - I have hope for you but not complete trust - You should adopt the same attitude - Don't have confidence too quickly - scrutinize yourself and whether you have made progress with ... » Continue Reading

Epistulae Morales ad Lucilium Letters 1-15

Category: Religion and Philosophy

I've written notes on this as I go. So far I've read 66/124 letters, so I've got a long long way to go. I'm gonna type up my notes here, mostly as motivation to finish the damn thing. Letter 1 1. - Moments are torn from us, gently removed, or glide beyond our reach - The worst kind of loss is due to carelessness. - Majority of your life is spent ill, a large portion doing nothing, and the who » Continue Reading

Swans- White Light from the Mouth of Infinity

Category: Music

First listen : Damn, this was pretty good. Big fan of the atmosphere and neo-folk sound. Definitely gonna give this another listen to see if there's anything I missed. Second listen : Note- this ended up being an analysis of the lyrics, so there you go. Better Than You: Starting off strong with a baby wailing. Cool. Sweet song Power and Sacrifice: Totally awesome, it has such a rich soundscape. Ve... » Continue Reading

Sufjan Stevens- Javelin

Category: Music

First impressions: Honestly, I didn't enjoy it that much. I was pretty bored throughout the whole thing, even though it's just 42 minutes. I get why people like it, it just doesn't really speak to me. That's not to say I don't like any music in this vein, but little in this album stood out to me. It wasn't depressing enough to warrant the slowness- it just didn't do it for me. I enjoyed the lyrics... » Continue Reading

underscores- Wallsocket

Category: Music

I listened to this album for the first time a day or so ago. I've done a few listens since that. Needless to say, I enjoy it a lot. I'm a big fan of her sound; the production is solid. From what I understand it's a concept album about a made up town called Wallsocket. The songs explore the lives of a few characters, all of which are very engaging and familiar. Very fun hyper-pop album with some te... » Continue Reading

Origami Angel- Somewhere City

Category: Music

I'm using this blog feature to "review" albums that I am listening to for the first time. This was a pretty sick album, I enjoyed it a lot. I liked the elements of midwest emo as well as the occasional heavier moment ("Doctor Whomst"). The opening track is a great, high energy introduction to the album. It's a fun album, and it's only 30 minutes, so it's great to toss on and just have a good time.... » Continue Reading

Epictetus, the Enchiridion 26-51

Category: Religion and Philosophy

Turns out there were 51 points in total 26. "These are casualties that will happen." You should apply this not only to others, but to your own experiences. 27. "As a mark is not set up for the sake of missing the aim, so neither does the nature of evil exist in the world." 28. You would be angry if your body was delivered to a passer by, so you should feel shame delivering your own mind to a passe... » Continue Reading

Epictetus, the Enchiridion 1-25

Category: Religion and Philosophy

The enchiridion (meaning handbook) is a summary of stoicism that epictetus taught. I'm reading through it and writing down the main points that I get. Each point in the book can be a paragraph or two, or even just a sentence. I'm taking notes as I read and then writing them up here with clarifications or questions. I don't know how many points there are but I've done 25 for now. 1. What is within ... » Continue Reading
