broken computer fan because of usage on my bed, real or not?

When i say "computer" i mean my arch linux os, hp laptop with intel i3 had it's fan broke down My mom says it's because i use it on my bed, while charging and a lot of the times overnight I don't want to believe her, but she might as well be right.
