A functional site can be fast? What makes it so? Following established (i.e. old) standards? Not loading 10,000 other site domains for ads? And the scripts from those as well? Sure, the UI may not be up to everyone's taste. The problem isn't tasteful rounded corners on jpegs though. That'd be an easy fix if that were the reason of bloat in modern sites.
