A functional site can be fast? What makes it so?
Following established (i.e. old) standards?
Not loading 10,000 other site domains for ads?
And the scripts from those as well?
Sure, the UI may not be up to everyone's taste. The problem isn't tasteful rounded corners on jpegs though. That'd be an easy fix if that were the reason of bloat in modern sites.
For me though, the reason for bloat is the drive to reach the mass market.
Niche or hobby projects can be speedy, well crafted, well kept, etc.
Should the niche project reach a mass market, then in comes the temptations: expansion, compromise, capitalization, then finally the sell-off punctuated with assurances that things will keep going as they had (hint: they won't, see Oculus).
There's plenty of cottage industries in tech, but it's seen almost as failure or only a stepping stone, and who can blame them? A nice product gone popular is niche no more and quickly follows the formula of growth and sale.
It'd be nice if more were willing to try, same as this site.
