Corentin makes a randomized blog-roll app for Spacehey

One of the weird joys of the early-00s web were the various randomizers -- click on a button and you'd be taken to a random person's page. They had the same thing, too, in that precambrian life-form, the "web-ring": Click here to visit a random page in the Hello Kitty web ring!

Now corentin has created a version of this for Spacehey: A little web app that serves up random Spacehey pages. You go here to input your Spacehey account, and then you can put a button on your profile page that, when someone clicks it, sends them to a random page; I've got the button on my profile now.

I'm a big fan of randomizers! Back in the early 00s they were great for serendipity -- the act of stumbling upon something you didn't know you wanted to find. Today's highly-sorted and -sifted algorithmic feeds at Facebook or Tiktok or Twitter tend to reward profiles that are already popular. Truly random picks are much weirder and thus, for my money, much better.

Nicely done!

(And yes, the entire phrase "webring" has been lost to history, so I'm not surprised you'd forgotten it)

I totally agree with the last paragraph. Thanks for highlighting this little project :)

I named it "blogroll" because I forgot the word "webring", and it was related (just remove the random part and it's all good), and now it's too late to change (the url is printed on some profiles) :'(
