You might remember me from the SpaceHey survey I ran a while back and be wondering where the update is. Well, there won’t be one.
I actually finished the blog, but I don’t think it’s worth posting—there’s just no point.
I had to discard over half of the [700+] responses because they were unusable, and beyond that, I’ve just lost interest in the site. What would the results even prove? Everything I found is obvious if you spend 10 seconds browsing the top blogs. Most users are kids, most are students, most are in North America, and most are inactive. Once I saw those results—especially the inactivity—I realized there wasn’t much reason to bother. This just leads me into my larger point:
There’s no variety anymore.
It’s just the same copy-paste posers claiming they want to "experience the old internet!!" but treating this site like any other social media platform.
Endless complaints about politics or whatever the latest outrage is.
I just want to see something interesting in the top blogs for once, but instead, it’s the same tired rants about Trump for the eighteenth time. He’s president—move on already, holy shit.
I’m not even right-leaning, I’m just exhausted by how this site has been overrun by the tankie crowd. Back when I posted more political content, things were fine, but about three months ago—right when Trump was sworn in—I started getting harassed in my DMs. Thus, I stopped posting.

I miss being able to have real conversations with people, but when one of the top blogs is "I prefer anime boys over real men," it’s just impossible.
And don’t even get me started on the half-baked “cancellations” people try to pull on this site—for what? Saying a mean word on Discord? Being a little rude in a comment section? Give me a break. You are not that important.
Then there’s the rampant inactivity. If I send you a friend request and you accept it, that means I actually want to interact with you. And don’t give me that “they might be shy” bullshit—I have a warning on my profile for that.
But instead, people log on once or twice and then disappear. Or if they do log on, they completely ignore the bulletins page. And when they do use the bulletins, half the time it’s just for venting and complaining, which gets annoying as hell. No one actually reads profiles or DNIs anymore.
I get the irony of me complaining about complaining—this whole blog is basically just that. But I feel like it needs to be said because this stuff is making SpaceHey practically unusable for normal, well-adjusted people. If you're chronically online, though? It’s perfect!
This site has turned into a mess, and I’m so done with it.
[Edit: I'm actually crying right after I posted this someone posted a pedophile sympathy blog. This site is so cooked]

I was wondering what happened to the survey, but I'm really not surprised at this outcome... you made good, or more so very true points.
I think this site got so popular by the sound of it, the novelty factor rather than actual interest to take part in it. people don't really want myspace, they just wanna say they're on it. they just want to create a profile and dip. this site has 1 million users but probably about 50k actually using the site, and that's being generous.
that's why it feels like there's so much on this site and yet nothing that lasts, it lures people in but doesn't keep them very well.
all that's kept me is here is that I've wisely selected my friends, the lil circles I've built here do make it worthwhile but that took me 4 years on this site.
its just not popular, except for the nuisances who lurk here for a little while just to treat this site like an old dusty spot for vandalism

On a serious note, some of the comments here honestly prove my point about the extremism that shows up on this site. The best explanation I can give is that on larger platforms, these kinds of people face more pushback due to the diversity of opinions—but here, they’re able to build their own echo chambers and freely delete any opposing views.
While I’m not inactive, I’ve definitely moved on from my old style of content—mostly due to the harassment, lol.

hey!! on the second half when you mentioned posting more bulletins and stuff, you made me want to give space hey a shot again!! i didnt really looked at blogs either so i want to try to do that again!! it sucks shitty and weird people hop on this platform and i had no idea these people were even on this platform though. thanks for spreading awareness abt it and thank you for relighting my motivation to be on spacehey again!!

I'm not sure what you were expecting when trying out this site. The amount of effort required to make a safe space that wards social misconduct is much higher than what any indie platform can provide. If you want to find people that bring a more positive space, you either need to be looking for them or present yourself to draw their attention. That means you are the one making the rules on who you talk to and enforcing them yourself. You can't just sit there and let a feed determine who you talk to. If you want that, the big social medias are much better at that.
I will note that it's still a bit irresponsible for the feeds to seem like the perfect place to talk to people. I don't blame you for thinking that a feed called "Top Blogs" will have only the best blogs out there. I'm not sure if there is a good solution besides taking first impressions seriously.
Last thing to note; If you do decide to start looking at first impressions more, make sure your own first impressions reflect what you want to see in others. Even if you can't quite meet your own expectations, putting some time to get somewhere close to them is worth it. The experience required might be really high to meet them so it might take a long while before you tinker with your first impressions enough that you like them.

thankfully i havent come across this since i've been mostly active on my bulletins but damn does that suck, i get complaining but sometimes it gets so redundant all you can do is to
make the world, a more welcoming place [which is what i want to do]

Well, as someone who is fifteen, a student and VERY american (im active however but shhh) this is probablly just a problum with spacehey being a novelty site. Sure, it's a fun is to express yourself on the web (however neocities also gets the job done (hence why i'm planning to make one soon)) but that's all it is to some people. And for alot of people you just don't wanna interact with. This widdles down the number of actual good interactions. I love this site I really do but I also see your frustration 🙏

Tied to anti-immigration, nativism, and sometimes authoritarianism.

Think: Trump’s America First, Le Pen in France, Orbán in Hungary.

you sound like you want a website with more algorithms. the whole point of spacehey is it’s slow social media - you see people and blogs you don’t like because it isn’t choosing what people and blogs you see for you. the site doesn’t fight to hold your interest like instagram or tiktok or youtube or whatever does, it leaves it up to you. i use this website every day, but i don’t expect it to hold my interest for hours at a time because that’s not what it’s designed to do, and that is what i appreciate about it, and why im here in the first place.
spacehey has always been a mess, but novelty makes that easier to overlook, for some people that novelty lasts a few days, others months or even a year or two. the novelty has worn off for me, but i appreciate the values the website has and the quality content some users on it produce, as well as the friends i have made here, so i keep coming back. there’s gonna be dickheads on other social media sites too, but there the owners of the platforms are also dickheads, that doesn’t seem to be true here.
a shame about the form responses though, could have been very interesting if people actuallt engaged with it properly.
My issue isn’t just that I’m seeing blogs I “don’t like.”
These blogs are becoming increasingly problematic—just look at the edit note at the end of the post. And it's not a one-off; this kind of thing is happening more and more often.
I’m bringing this up because the site didn’t used to be like this. I’ve been here for over a year, and while the platform itself has improved, the kind of people it’s attracting lately... aren’t exactly the best.

i get what you mean, ive been here for 2 years now, but considering that historically blogs have contained gore i consider anything better lol, i get the bar is low tho. i think it’s always been relatively bad, just changed categories and intensity, as it used to be single friend groups dominating top blogs with annoying spam-like entries, then gore, now then it got very political, now it’s quite ragebaity. i get why you’re upset about it, but i don’t think it’s got suddenly worse as you seem to see it
i saw the blog at the end out in the wild too, had to just whatthefuckkkk and move on i did not have the time to process that that day

I've only been here literal hours and have already found some interesting stuff. It's not so much that there's nothing to discover here, the same crowd that tries their hardest to politicise and police every other netspace just does the same here. Inactivity is a plague once half of your friend list is inactive you are too,,, idk it's frustrating. Everyone fighting is only entertaining for a while and then there's just the insane rage bait it's just like,, what happened? I have only been here for about a month, but since this site has no algorithm, I really have to search for the things I like, which I don't mind. I follow a lot of artists and people who have different interests, so my bulletin feed is always interesting.
Also you're complaining about people using Bulletins for "venting and complaining", but like what do you expect? On Twitter, people would vent and complain all the time, right? If that's not the type of content you want to see stop following them.
Be the change you want to see. But to be fair, I have only been here about a month and have been active every day.
I think you should post the blog because you spent time and energy on it. It could spark a conversation. Who knows 🤷🏽♀️
