Devil and the wine
The ticking of the clock as it hangs over the bar shelves its reflection in the millions of bottles that shined in the dim lighting, its contents looking like potions made from witches of another world. It was 3 in the morning...the witching hour. Maxwell was known to be working the bar during the mornings and afternoons but today he had to fill in for one of his friends that did a night shift. As he wiped the bar counter humming to himself in the empty bar listening as cars passed by outside in the street he couldn't help but wonder what mischievous wonders he would see. Maxwell believed in many things..especially of all the amazing and whimsical things that happen only at the witching hour. As he took notice of the luminescent full moon from one of the bars windows he heard the door’s bell ringing signaling a customer entering the establishment. As Maxwell got out a small shot glass for the man he can’t help but stare at how unhuman like he was. The man’s eyes were as red as fire, his hair was black as the night. His clothes were black and red and covered in chains that clanged as he walked, instead of shoes there were hooves tapping against the floor as he came up to the bar taking off his coat and hat and laying them on a bar stool next to him as he sat down. “I would like a bloody mary if it won't be any trouble”,the man said to Maxwell gruffely. Maxwell being as cheery as could be. “Not at all! One bloody mary coming right up!”Maxwell replied as he began work on the order. As Maxwell worked on the bloody mary a young man came in. Maxwell recognized the man as being a well known businessman in the town. The Man’s name was Seth Hagan he was known to be the owner of a top notch store down the street. His Items were famous for being overly priced for how small and tacky they may seem. He even lied about having real gold and diamond based jewelry when in reality it was fake. “Ah Mr.Hagan I do hope you don’t plan on scamming me out of our whiskey”,Maxwell joked as he gave the man his bloody mary.“Oh no,no I only do that with my own whiskey…”,Hagan replied with a smile as he sat down next to the man who had started to drink his blood mary. Hagan’s happy mood didn’t stay for long when his face shifted to a mix of horror and anger. “Alastor!”,Hagan exclaimed. Alastor looked at Hagan with a devilish smile as if Hagan had made a joke “Why the long face old friend? I’m just here to take half of what you owe me is all”,he replied as hagan got up quickly from his seat. “I don’t owe you anything!”,Hagan replied angrily. Alastor looked at maxwell. “Young man…is there perhaps a private place where we could talk..? I apologize for using your bar as this meeting place all of a sudden but it is urgent”,he explained to maxwell. Maxwell looked curious and nodded. “Sure…you guys can use the office in the back..since i’m the only one here..but don’t touch anything”,he said and showed the two men to the office. “Oh! Before you go-could you bring me an empty wine bottle?”Alastor asked. Maxwell looked confused. “An empty wine bottle? Are you sure sir? We have plenty of wine”,he said, making sure he heard right. “Oh I'm sure you have plenty of wine..but I would like an empty wine bottle..please”,Alastor replied back. “Alright then one empty wine bottle”,Maxwell said and left for a few minutes coming back with one of the empty wine bottles they had been using as a vase. “Here you go sir, anything else?”Maxwell asked. “That’ll be all, thank you young man”,Alastor said and turned to Hagan. Maxwell nodded and left the room. He knew he shouldn’t eavesdrop..and knew he should be tending the bar…but he really wanted to hear what alastor and hagan was talking about. So he pressed himself against the wooden office door listening to the muffled voices of hagan and alastor. “I don’t owe you anything! If anything you owe me!”Hagan said, upset. “Me? I owe you? I gave you everything here! Your fancy clothes..your department..your luxury house..EVERYTHING! I OWN everything you use!”Alastor replied, annoyed. “ I don’t want you ever near me! I don’t care if I have to go homeless! I still have my spirit!”Hagan said, upset. “Your spirit? You fool! You sold your body, your mind, your everything to me! I OWN you! You are just like this Wine bottle! Empty!”Alastor said angrily. “You dare to try and command me to keep away from you? I am a god! I am what people stray away from in the dark! You…you are a fool!”,Alastor said angrily. “I’ll never worship you! Your power is only to those evil!”Hagan replied terrified. “You are EVIL! I made you EVIL!”Alastor replied, raising his voice. “I have had enough! You are going to pay me back…NOW!”,Alastor said. Maxwell looked curious listening in and looked terrified hearing a blood curdling scream from hagan starting off loud and slowly becoming distorted and quiet until everything was silent. Maxwell looked terrified wondering what had happened. Did this man just kill hagan? What would the boss think if he found out that maxwell allowed a man to murder another in his office?! He quickly went to the bar to grab the phone but before he could pick it up and dial for the cops Alastor came out holding the wine bottle…it was filled with red velvet wine making Maxwell put down the phone confused. The bottle was the same one that had been empty before. The sticker on the side was different. “Here you go young man for your trouble”,Alastor said, putting the bottle on the bar counter before tugging on his cloak and walking out of the bar into the darkness of the night. Maxwell quickly looked at the wine bottle confused reading the name of it. “Red Hagan Wine” was labeled on the sticker. Maxwell’s mouth opened and stayed there shocked and horrified. What will happen to Hagan's business if he does not return? What will he do if the boss asks about Hagan's disappearance? Maxwell quickly put the wine bottle into his backpack and zipped it up before quickly leaving the bar without locking it.Two weeks later the bar had two photos up on the cork board. The labels on them read “MISSING”. The black and white photos of Hagan and Maxwell stained on to the papers as if something was leaking on to it and yet..no one ever went over to look at it..but…sometimes you can see a man come in and order a bloody mary with a cloak on before disappearing right before the order is given to him.
