'dear catastrophe waitress'

Hello all!!! Haven't written in a while but I just wanted to today.

If you're wondering if I enjoyed myself at that emo nite like I was talking about in the other ramble, it was okay... not the best though! It only got good towards the end when the DJs started playing the bigger bands. Beforehand they were just playing a lot of poppy 2010s metalcore that me and my friends weren't that into. I wish there could've been more post-hardcore from the earlier half of the 2000s or even some second-wave emo but oh well I guess I'm just a bit of a snob and I shouldn't expect too much from a nostalgia night where playing the hits is the first priority.

This also wasn't necessarily their fault but the sound mixing was so loud I couldn't hear myself talking to my friends, and had to repeat myself a lot while also fighting off the overstimulation. I understand that some of the music itself was inherently meant to be loud and it's probably funny that I willingly go to these kinds of nights with sensory issues, but then I remember my allistic friends were in fact also having the same issues with the sound, and I've been to other emo nites and many other gigs/small music related events and never remember the sound being that overbearing. It's just that venue's speakers or their sound guy that's the problem here.

I've got a whole load of little music things to go to next month with this same friend I went to the emo nite with, and I think regardless of whether I'm going to a venue that I know I will be chill with or not I'm going to invest in some ear defenders and cover them in cute stickers and trinkets so I can accommodate myself a little better when I go out.

First I've got my cousin's band Yum Cha playing a gig! I haven't seen them since we both played a private show for a mutual friend's birthday in January so I'm veryyyy excited. At this point I've seen them so many times there are several songs I can sing along to even though they're not even out yet. My friend Mikey who you might be friends with here on Spacehey will be coming with me too :3 which means I'll be out with my friend from the emo nite, him, and all my local music scene friends so it's actually going to be almost like a little party.

Secondly, I'm going to my first goth night with the same aforementioned friend from the emo nite who I keep talking about. I'm (clearly) not goth myself, but she is. We may have bonded over emo bands but her love for all music under the goth umbrella, and my love for classic indie music is what individualizes us at the end of the day. As I've regressed back to my emo tendencies though she has been happily supporting me in going to all these emo events so it only makes sense that I return the love and experience her side of the tracks. In 2020 while I never was committed enough to take on the label myself I was in love with a goth once, and a bit of their music taste and style rubbed off on me so I have a base level of understanding! I became pretty sharp at the Siouxsie makeup. I just need to listen to more of the music so I'll know how to sing along to more songs and fit in a bit better.

Lastly, I've got yet another emo nite - but this time it is Halloween-themed and at a venue with a sound system that isn't going to make me potentially go deaf within the next five years. I'm going to have to think of what my Halloween costume will be. I've been to one with this particular DJ who's playing that night too and they have a selection of music that appeals to me and my friend a little better.

In terms of things I've been to and done very recently, I saw Capricore on Saturday. You may recall that I talked in an earlier entry about working on a new song with their singer who is a great friend of mine. (Well I didn't mention that he was their singer but yeah you can put two and two together now) Everyone in that band is very cool and I hadn't seen them in ages so it felt very refreshing to be reunited with them and hear some of their newer songs that I hadn't been introduced to yet. They've been writing A LOT. I love how spacey and wacky their sound is, but at the end of the day, a lot of their songs are about pretty normal silly things you experience being a Kiwi. The other bands on the lineup with them were very tight too and it was also very varied across genres. Alongside Capricore's very unique flavor of alt-rock I ended up seeing a punk band full of teens, a rather peppy indie group, and a very talented and ferocious metal band. I didn't really care about how randomized it all was - I just like live music as long as the musicians are good at doing what they do.

At the end of the night, I and my friend walked downstairs to the bar below the stage to sit down and take a break so our legs wouldn't feel so sore, and in perfect timing, they were playing emo music. We got invited to the floor to dance by a bunch of sweet millennials and while I wanted to restrain myself and only remain for a couple songs so I wasn't out too late, unfortunately, that shit is catnip to me and I had to sing along to everything. I eventually went home shortly after Welcome To The Black Parade because whenever they play that song I decide that there's nothing else to wait for and it's time to go home and go to bed. It's like that saying from How I Met Your Mother, but instead of "nothing good happens after 2 a.m." it's "nothing good happens after the rock DJ plays WTTBP".

In terms of more quiet endeavors, I'm on my last term of uni (I feel like this entry is long enough already so I'll maybe talk about more specifics regarding that in another one) and today I've mainly been working on a lot of self-indulgent online projects. Earlier I was listening to Dear Catastrophe Waitress by Belle and Sebastian when I started this entry because that album is just so calming to write to, I'd also been working on some twee.net stuff as an admin and I needed some music to fit the mood. At some point, I'm planning to write a brief biography about them for the website because despite the fact they're probably the biggest and most well-known indiepop band in the world they only have their discography logged there and nothing much else! I've got a lot of work there to do.

Anyways, that's everything! I probably had the most annoying earful to give you. I hope you're doing well.
