One great scene in BCS s2 Ep8

I thought it would be a fun idea if I take scenes from whatever show I'm watching and analyze them as a first time watcher. I'll try to do one scene for every episode that I watch from now onwards, I'm not gonna do this with the episodes before this one only after it. Of course there will be spoilers for this episode's big climax so be warned and if there are any trigger warnings in future they will be up here, fortunately there are no trigger warnings for this discussion.

We will be discussing S2 Ep.8 (Fifi) of Better Call Saul particularly the scene where Jimmy forges Mesa Verde documents.

The scene involves Jimmy going to the copy shop with his brother's documents pertaining to a big case. He drives to the copy shop late at night and lists the materials that he needs, he then lays the documents out on the table and a Little Barrie song plays as he carefully changes a small detail in the documents. He changes an address on all the documents from 1261 to 1216.

Why does this scene matter? This scene is a culmination of Jimmy's anger towards his brother, Chuck but also his commitment to Kim. You see, he has had a rocky relationship with Chuck for the whole season and Chuck is very sick so naturally as the healthier brother, he takes care of Chuck but a deep resentment lies beneath the surface, one which he can't express because he still loves his brother. Prior to this scene Kim, his now partner, told Jimmy that she'll practice law ethically and he'll practice law his way but they'll cover costs together as long as Jimmy doesn't get her in trouble with his schemes and cheap tricks. The only reason why Jimmy would ever practice law legitimately without his tricks and schemes is because Kim didn't like it but both him and Kim have come to terms with the fact that he can't change his ways. For some extra context, Chuck and Howard took a big case from Kim, Chuck and Howard are partners for the massive and trusted law firm, HHM and Kim wanted to secure that client because she was the one who found them and both Kim and Jimmy needed the money and reputation from that case but HHM took it from her clutches. Chuck then falls ill due to his condition and Jimmy looks after him.

This is when those conflicting feelings start to arise in Jimmy. He is worried about his brother but he sees this as an opportunity to strike. Then the copy shop scene ensues. Jimmy is methodical and meticulous, he's in his element and for the first time in a long time, he looks to be natural. When working in his own confines and by his own rules which often borders ethics, Jimmy can get shit done. He swaps the numbers in an almost calming montage and it feels planned out. He tells the guy at the copy shop what he needs with certainty and then gets working. This scene is not only shot beautifully but also the music that plays really suits it, the song that plays is a beautiful, sleazy, bluezy Little Barrie song which makes this event seem marginally less dramatic than usual and instead makes it seem like a casual evening in Jimmy's life and it is. Jimmy is a hard worker but only when it comes to his rules and now that he can work by his rules again, he feels comfortable again. Why swap the numbers though, I thought about this too and it's a very subtle change, a change that I haven't seen the outcome of but I don't think it would be too big a deal for any other lawyer but for HHM it would be a massive oversight. Chuck and Howard steal the clients from Kim by mentioning their experience and age, they are much older than Kim and Jimmy and that means they know more and are more reliable to other boomers. Changing the numbers like this but only on the HHM documents and not any of the other ones will probably make them look sloppy, a lawyer as renowned as Chuck McGill doesn't even know the correct address. Jimmy is Chuck's brother and knows him better than anyone, he even mentions it once or twice in the first season I think but Jimmy would know that Chuck's condition also provides Chuck with an insecurity. Given that his condition is very rare, he is worried about appearing crazy to others. By swapping the numbers that would pinpoint Chuck's insecurity and make him seem a little crazy, especially someone as methodical as Chuck. Any normal person would notice that they've been using the wrong numbers and recognize the mistake and move on but Chuck is meticulous. I think that when confronted, Chuck would be absolutely certain that he is correct which would place more emphasis on what could've been a minute detail, blowing one small number way out of proportion and in turn making Chuck appear to be crazy.

To summarize, this scene is important because it represents Jimmy returning to what he knows and coming to terms with himself once more and serves as an expression of his silent resentment towards Chuck, pinpointing his insecurities and weaknesses in a way that only he can.
