"Birdy" (Nick Cage Film)

Get this... two buddies get back from the Vietnam War, and one is a little off his rocker (understandably). This buddy, in particular, is obsessed with birds, hence his nickname, Birdy. This film inspires me because it breaks the rules of what is considered "sellable" for a film, stepping over what is comfortable, picturesque, and easily digested. It tackles tough subjects such as mental health and war using imperfect characters that aren't so predictable. As an American, I have family and friends affected by the war. Some were in it, and some only read the headlines. I also can't begin to comprehend how disastrous it was for the Vietnamese. The comedic twists presented by the duo left me feeling less uncomfortable but more at ease, feeling like it is possible to grin and bear it- the realities of life no matter how dark and complex. I think the birds serve as a metaphor for how Birdy yearns for peace and freedom. These may be a cliche string of observations though it works for me!
