I discovered this song a while ago but it still hits hard. The song is about once-young, lovers. Tom tries to reach her over the phone and there is a lot of touching recollection on his part about how things used to be when they were together versus how they are now that they are older, living separate, totally different lives. It's a great song to start to get into Waits. The piano from the beginning sounds like one in an old chapel or perhaps, a lonely bar/saloon somewhere. My words simply do not do it justice. My favorite line is this:
"And those were the days of roses, poetry, and prose
And Martha, all I had was you, and all you had was me."
His old stuff never fails to comfort the soul, make you chuckle, or ball your eyes out. Cheers!
