Met someone interesting at a gas station

I dropped my brother off down the road a bit and headed to a gas station to fuel up because I was pretty low, could only put 5 in. I don't ever really have a lot of money on me but while I was fueling this little old lady walked up from behind my car and started talking to me. She had a very low voice which made a lot of what she said gibberish but i was more worried that this elderly woman was walking around in 102 degree heat. She told me she had very little amount of money and was hoping to get a newspaper and if I would help her get it, I wont lie I felt sorta suspicious of it. I don't like thinking negative of peoples intentions and I would rather think they are being honest, so after she talked for a little bit I said id go and get it for her. I also got her something to drink, I couldn't imagine how dehydrated she probably was walking so far from her house. But after I bought it the manager thanked me before I could get it to her, I guess he had seen her a few times before and knew her. But she thanked me and said I was a good man, I didn't want her walking home so I gave her a ride back which was about 2 miles down the road into a nice looking neighborhood. Her house sat on the top of the hill, it was very overgrown, it didn't look bad or run down from the front just needed a good mow. I got out to make sure she made it to the porch and noticed immediately how dire it was in her house. She told me how her husband taught her the electrician trade and how she almost died working on an outlet because it zapped her pretty bad. I guess it left a lasting impression to her. She had all the electric lines removed from her house and lived an old fashion sort of life. You can tell her house use to be very beautiful and full of life but her grandkids seemed to never visit and neither did her kids. She wasn't the main grandmother of the family, its like seeing a forgotten person who never gave up. It really hurt to see, She thanked me though after telling me a few stories of stuff she worked on around her house and the hardship of doing it herself. It felt wrong to leave without offering more. I wish I could've saved her from the situation and gave her a life she could happily die with. But that's just way life is in rural America, never ending hardship. A sort of hardship you cant create, hearing stories of generational poverty is one thing but not only to experience it but see it first hand everywhere I look brings a sadness you cant shake off. Helen lived a hard life, you could see it in her face. A women at 81, no car, no power, and no one to look for help from. If I wasn't in poverty myself I would've offered all I can. And I feel like I haven't anyway. Being the man the world needs is a world of never ending self sacrifice and its all I want but my many responsibilities to other has stopped me. If i could offer it all to help that one person experience the goodness the world can offer I would, but I have sold my soul to someone else already.
