Over these past two days I experienced the worldwide phenomenon that is Barbenheimer. I watched Barbie with my dad and Oppenheimer with my mom. Was the meme worth it? Yeah, sure I'd say so. But at the same time I think it's important to treat the two movies individually rather than as one combined experience. With that being said, I'm basically going to use this blog post to encapsulate my feelings on the whole meme so I don't have to keep bringing it up.
Personally, I'm just excited that two of the best movies of the year, the best movies both directors have done so far, are making exuberant amounts of money at the box office. It's so rare for a non-sequel to be extraordinary and get the praise and box office that it deserves, let alone TWO of them in the same weekend. This truly is a history-making box office run.
This achievement is monumental because these are films that have both earned this amount of attention. People are going in droves to see both an excellent drama and a dorky (positive) comedy that harkens back to the goofy comedies such as Airplane, Top Secret, Monty Python and the Holy Grail, Pee-wee's Big Adventure. We need more movies like both Barbie and Oppenheimer, and I'm hoping we get them instead of just "Barbie 2".
Looking for a winner between Barbie and Oppenheimer misses the point. Both movies are cultural landmarks being touted as instant classics, deservedly so, and making loads of money in the process. The winner is everyone.
