Eulogy to Reddit (As I Know It)

If you have been in the know in regards to social media themselves, you probably know about the recent controversy regarding Reddit and its API Pricing. More information can be found here. There's also an infographic being spread around about this. Should any of the links no longer work, here's a quick summary of what is happening:

  • Reddit is raising the cost to using its API
  • This API is used for a lot of 3rd Party Tools that aren't implemented into reddit yet, such as better moderation tools, better accessibility options, a better experience on mobile (aka Apollo, RIF, Infinity, etc.), fun bots, and more that I don't know about.
  • These raised costs are unaffordable to a lot of developers, most of whom can't pay for it, and thus will shut down in the coming weeks/months
  • Reddit is unwilling to lower this pricing, and this, combined with previous problems and controversies surrounding the management of this site, have led people to protest by deleting their accounts, and shuttering subreddits (aka communities) permanently or temporarily
I will not be one of those people who will be deleting their accounts as of now, but I will probably be abandoning Reddit. It's a real shame too, as I have had fun with this site, in spite of its problems both specific to it, and more generally a part of social media addiction.

I have signed up for many social media accounts, from Tik-Tok, to Twitter, Tumblr, Facebook, etc. I stuck around Instagram for a while before dropping it and privating my account, and by then Reddit became my primary social media. It was the only one I considered posting to since I barely post on social media and just scrolled through a myriad of content. From the weird but fun communities, to the "variety" of perspectives, to the useful information garnered from it, to widespread events like r/place, I may have only been on the site for 5 years, but it was a major part of me growing up. Just this past year I finally donated to the popular alternative to the official app on IOS, Apollo, and now its shutting down.

So where does that leave me? Well, as I said before, I won't be deleting in my account, simply abandoning it. I believe in preservation, especially digital preservation like video games and internet stuff. As for whats next on my social media journey? Well, you are looking at it. I'll be honest, I really only browse the internet rather than create and post within it most of the time. I may still browse reddit, and the likes, but anonymously now.

The reason why I signed up Spacehey is because of its nonaddictive nature rooted in MySpace, as well as privacy reasons. I feel comfortable writing long posts here, mostly because I can easily do it. But yeah, this is the last social media I will probably sign up for the foreseeable future, and as it stands, this is a good place to send my era of social media off.

- I write I a lot don't I?

P.S. I guess I have Goodreads, but I don't really see it as a social media space. I just use it to track books and write reviews
