A Review of the Xootr MG and the Reality of Kick Scooters

Sorry that I couldn't get a blog public last week, but I publicized my announcement for my review of Happy City on Goodreads. With life being wack and such I can't guarantee if I can keep up with a weekly schedule and certainly not when in the week I will update stuff, but I'll strive to do it anyway. With that being said, here's my new entry.

Have you ever had a scooter before? If you had, then it was most likely when you were a kid. Man, were those things fun, just kicking off your feet and zooming down sidewalks and hills. It was easier to just hope on and ride compared to a bike, and you didn't need that much balance compared to a skateboard. That thrill combined with the desire to be less car dependent while still being able to get places fast (and exercise), were the reasons why I bought the Xootr MG.

Product Review

Lets talk about the product itself. There are multiple variations of this kick scooter though I went with its most popular version the MG. It's quite a hefty price at $329, and it certainly doesn't help that I got their carry bag for about an extra $40. Its certainly is worth the price though. From previous research, its widely praised to be one of the best products out there, and from personal experience the all metal build quality feels reassuring. It has a wider deck to make it more comfortable for adults to ride on, two brakes to help slow down your momentum/speed, an adjustable handle bar, and a folding mechanism to make your ride more compact and carry-able. Trying this out myself after a few moments of getting used to it. its no wonder why many people praise this product. Without a doubt, this took me back to my younger years.

A Tiring and Niche Reality

That is, when you are able to glide through sidewalks and streets easily. Lets be honest, even on even ground your leg can get tired from kicking the thing all the time. Now imagine doing that on an incline/hill. That was the horrid reality I had the face as the hill I zoomed down on so fast that I had to keep braking to slow down, became a arduous journey, tirelessly kicking my dying legs up the hill again, and that hill was a really long incline, not steep, but definitely a walk up. A bike or heck, even walking would be a much more better experience than scooting up.

I'll be honest, I'm out of shape, I'm fat, and I might not have minded this downside so much. However I had to face another reality, I had niche uses for this scooter. Where I live, all the essentials I need are in close proximity, and those that aren't have another means of transportation to easily get there and are readily available to me. I would use this like once or twice a month at most, and while I could consider this a future investment for if I have a short commute to work or something, I could also buy it in the future.

A Good Product that Isn't For Me (At least for now)

With that in mind, I have since return all the products I bought from the manufacturer's website, and it certainly stings that I will have a bit of a return deduction for delivery costs. However I did learn something informational with my experience with the Xootr. Sometimes things aren't all cracked up to be, and in this case, scooters and perhaps any other modes of transportation like bikes and such are just not needed when I can walk, run, jog, or bus to where I need go relatively comfortably. That, and the high price tag for this product certainly wised me up to future expensive purchases. That doesn't mean its a bad product, but its like using a hammer to prune a plant, its just not for this situation.

That doesn't mean scootering is off the table. Perhaps in the future I could buy one of their less expensive variants as a fun things to have around and perhaps use for some unforeseen situation. Perhaps you may like it too. I would wholly recommend you buying the Xootr MG or any of the Xootr variants so long, so long as you recognize your situation + environment, and heavily consider your usage of the scooter within that environment. Will you use it often enough to justify the purchase? Is the price tag too high to not take advantage of returns? Would the strenuous uphill climbs offset the joys of riding downhill or gliding through relatively even ground? Whatever the case you may have, I hope this blog entry informs you should you ever have a interest in kick scooters.

-With that in mind, I have wrote so much today even outside of this oh my g-
