things about musical theatre that i would like to talk about

musical theatre is awesome. i listen to a bunch of indie crap and don't like loud things like raves and concerts but i LOVE musical theatre. i'm gonna ramble about it for like 10 minutes and it'll take you about two minutes to read.

some musicals i love:

- into the woods. i just love sondheim in general but i love how all of his shows take established ideas and spins them on their heads to adapt them for new eyes. one of my audition songs is from into the woods and i don't know i just love sondheim which leads me to my second point

- sunday in the park with george. i barely even remember the end of this musical anymore but hearing the "sunday" motif just gives me chills i love it

- legally blonde. showstopping. the first show i ever did where i played a lead and it's so motivating and hilarious and i hope anyone who sees it until the end of time just leaves with a smile on their face.

- little women. my friend is starring in a new adaptation different from the musical i'm talking about and why would you try and beat out excellence. from better kicking off the musical and some things are meant to be making me fully suicidal there is no reason for this musical to not be held in lights just like gypsy or anything goes.

- the drowsy chaperone. it's meta, it's comedic, it's existential. i love it

- the last five years. the simplistic staging (usually) and the fact the entire show is just a masterclass in two people's techniques to prove how in love they are with the other character they barely interact with is hypnotizing. if you like theatre you love jason robert brown. even thirteen pales in comparison to this in my eyes.

some performers i love:

- jeremy jordan. because who wouldn't? seeing him snubbed for the greatest showman hurt but you know what his career is taking stronger directions hopefully.

- lea salonga. every time i pick out a song to perform lea has usually done it first. she is everything i could never be and i am everything she ever wanted to be at times. so.

- julie benko. she is an up and comer (to a certain extent) and she is my fanny brice. i have a habit of noticing those who are humble and those who aren't and she is certainly humble.

- patti lupone. she is a DIVA. but you know what she stands up for what she believes and her hot headedness reminds me of myself sometimes so i'll let her slide because you know she believes in her craft and cares about it rather than just benefitting herself.

performers i hate.

- sutton foster. i obviously respect her and would love to meet her one day but i just don't understand the hype! why is her and her nasally voice chosen time and time again to make heaps of money? she is just a good dancer who has comedic timing and the world bends to her every whim. i don't get it!

- andrew lloyd webber. okay OKAY i know he is not a performer but i don't get how he wrote a couple good musicals and then stuck his head in the sand and generated a bunch of trash. love never dies? he even got something kind of right with bad cinderella and then ruined it with the broadway transfer TT

i kind of hate how little space there is for asian voices in the broadway space, with the flop of kpop the musical and the biggest things on broadway when you think asian being vietnamese prostitution (miss saigon) and burmese slaves (the king and i). obviously i'm generalizing and hopefully anyone worth giving the thought towards doesn't see asians this way but. it's so disheartening when you are being boxed by an industry you want to be part of so badly.

i also hate how set up people are when they seek post secondary education if you already have someone in the business/money. applying to colleges and seeing all these people with audition coaches, thousands of dollars of dance training and money to afford personal accompanists is insane. i feel horrible when i see people wanting to be part of theatre, but their potential is untapped because they can't afford training to grow their talents. seeing some of the peers i've worked with/competed against actually having their foot in the door is just so discouraging because you know it doesn't matter who is working harder, the person with connections will usually win out. [which i mean is fine and part of the business but there must be so many people out there who would be stunning on a broadway stage but just cannot get their opportunity to do it.]

i don't know. talk to me about it if you wanna. these ideas are all obviously halfbaked i can't spend hours vomiting out opinions i have an audition tomorrow!
