~I have an online journal I write in to keep
myself stable and sane. One portion of this online journal is doing daily reviews
of songs I liked and writing it down, from now on, I will try to share this
music with everyone else. Todays song is "Final Hero" by the Russian post-punk group Kino. The translation for the
lyrics are as follows;
The night is short, our goal is out of reach,
You often want to drink at night,
You go to the kitchen,
But the water here is bitter,
You can't sleep here,
And you don't want to live here.
Good morning to you, our last hero!
Good morning to you and those like you,
Good morning to you, our last hero!
Hello, last hero...
You wanted to be alone, but that quickly passed,
You wanted to be alone, but you couldn't be alone,
You've got an easy load, but your hand becomes numb,
And you meet the sunrise, while playing "The fool"...
Good morning to you, our last hero!
Good morning to you and those like you,
Good morning to you, our last hero!
Hello, last hero...
You strive to leave early morning
A phone call is like an order to "Go ahead!"
You go there, where you don't want to go,
You go there, where no one waits for you.
I really feel this song for the profound
depression it shows off, the unhappiness with life. the inability to find
comfort in ones life while being forced to move forward. The night is short, as
in both life and the rest we get to enjoy in it is very limited. While our
goals seem endless and impossible to reach. Wanting to drink at night can be
taken in two ways, one as being unable to sleep and needing a drink of water to
calm your nerves, or to get a drink of alcohol in order to "calm"
your nerves/escape. The following lyrics pair this nicely too, bitter water
possibly meaning that even simple things like water cant seem to help the
protagonist, or alternatively bitter water referring to alcohol once more. The
protagonist is unable to find comfort in their own home is incapable of resting
of calming down. The good morning chorus comes across in several tones,
partially mocking the protagonist as being lazy/tired, but also in celebration
for our hero to finally grace the world with their presence, and not just them,
but celebration of people who are similar. The hero wanted to be alone, but
they quickly became lonely, the wished to be alone, but were unable to be so,
either because other people are in their lives or because they needed to be
near others. The next lyrics solidify the themes of depression by showing that
even with relatively light work, the hero is unable to to actually apply
themselves or put in the effort. They go to meet the sunrise, which could mean
they wasted their day, or they simply slept through it, going to the previous
lyrics about discomfort, alcohol and depression. They played the
"fool". This time the chorus comes across more morbid and mournful
for the hero and their life. Next our hero wakes with great haste commanded by
their phone calls, or their need to work. They don't want to wake up and go
forward, but they have to, and nobody is waiting for them or cares.
