how do we research the human mind and brain?
Edward Titchener thought introspection was a way of learning about psychology however
no one else can look into your mind so it was deemed not scientific.
since the mind was not observable from the outside john Watson coined Behaviorism.
we can only study observable actions and behavior while also identifying the environmental conditions that lead to a behavior.
so stimuli -------> response
then in 1980 the cognitive revolution came and said the mind interprets the stimuli to form a response and it became more like this
stimuli ------> mind/brain ------> response
now what's the difference between correlation and causation?
only an experiment (independent variable) can define causation.
in the example of the age of the parent and disease of the child the higher the age of the mother the higher the risk of down syndrome.
and the age of the father correlates with schizophrenia.
does the age of the father increase the chances of schizophrenia
it could be bad sperm or it could be certain kinds of people are more likely to have kids later in life.
a good example of an experiment that studies behavior is the broken window theory experiment.
researchers had a wall next to a bike rack and attached white flyers to people's bikes. when the wall had graffiti people were more likely to throw the flyer on the ground.
ok im tired ill stop at
