Entry #016 - Optimism is Hard

I'm still finding it difficult to be optimistic about all of the changes happening in my life.

Yesterday was my first day at my new job, and it could have gone better. The rumors about this bakery are true โ€” shift leaders SUCK at training new employees. They are very nice people... but being nice doesn't equate to being efficient and good at your job. I felt pretty clueless the whole time due to insufficient training. I've never worked in a kitchen environment, and I have absolutely no cash-handling experience, yet they had me up at the register taking orders after being there for only an hour. It was stressful.

It also feels awkward that nearly all of my new coworkers are almost a decade younger than me.

This bakery is still an improvement from my previous job. I'm no longer destroying my body and worsening my arthritis in a hot, filthy warehouse. Instead, I get to bake cookies with teenagers all day and it's much closer to my home. I just ride my bicycle to work now. And I get to bring home free cookies to my fiancรฉ and roommates, so that's nice I suppose.

Working with a younger crowd actually has some surprising perks โ€” they're so open-minded! I'm a visibly queer individual, and several of the workers casually asked me what my preferred pronouns are. They're very nonchalant about it, which is so cool. I told them I don't have much of a preference between He and They.
