15/09/2022 - I planted my first seeds!

Yesterday I planted my first ever seeds, some basil and spring onion. I'm excited to see them grow, but I'm going to have to learn patience because it's going to take a long time to see results (10-14 days to see any growth at all).

I bought a smaller bag of potting mix because I didn't think I'd need a giant 10L/25L sack, but it turns out I did because I ran short on mix lol, so my second tray is only half full. As a side note, buying potting mix is more complicated than I thought it'd be! There's so many varieties not even including fertilizer (which I still don't know anything about). There was a seed/cutting/propagating potting mix, so I think when I next go shopping I'll get that and a general purpose one too for the bigger plants.

Back to my plants, the tray on the left is basil, and the tray on the right is spring onion. It's all watered so now really I just keep watering and wait. To my knowledge I want to keep it fairly moist at the start, but I don't want to overwater it because otherwise the roots won't grow out to try and seek water. To start with I soaked it completely through (there are holes at the bottom though so any excess water was drained), and I should water it again 2-3 days from now.

I live in Australia and it's still a little cold here as it's only the start of Spring, so I'm hoping that the weather is warm enough for the plants to be able to grow. I'm also keeping it outside despite videos saying I'll get better results keeping seedlings inside and out of the wind, but I don't really have anywhere inside where I can put them. They are at least undercover outside and there's a plastic shield on my patio blocking a lot of the wind so I'm hoping it isn't much of an issue.

I'll make another post as soon as I can see some growth, which I am very excited to see!
