ps3 being ahead of its time, part 2

up next i'll be talking about the exotic ram system the ps3 uses. the xbox 360 used 512mb of gddr3 memory whilst the ps3 only used 256. why? and how did it still have such good performance?

essentially, the ps3 split its ram into 2 sections: gddr3 ram and an experimental xdr ram. it also took advantage of the spu's (see previous blog entry for an explanation on those) to distribute information in smaller packets, which increased the speed and efficiency to which the console processed information.

below is a simple single-core design with a 512mb ram device. sure the space on the ram is good and it can process large levels of information, however if something is too graphically demanding for the core it will cause major levels of reduced performance for the device.

now here is a (very oversimplified) diagram of how the ps3's ram functioned. the two ram sections were also dedicated to different functions which streamlined processing. this meant that if a process was too demanding on the console, performance drops would be near unnoticeable. however: this is ONLY the case if the game was developed with the spu's in mind. if that isn't the case, then the diagram above is what the console processes would have looked like.
