Maybe it's because I haven't played an updated version of Minecraft in a long while, mostly just playing older versions of the game, mainly 1.0, with anything regarding the newer versions just being online anarchy servers or attempts at a superflat survival world.
I created a new hardcore world, let it load up, and my god, right off the bat, everything seems to be a little more substantial.
I spawned in a dense forest, literally right next to a large pit, with an ocean just south of me. It seemed a lot bigger, a lot more intricate, and looking off into the ocean and seeing nearby islands and distant parts of my land revealed much more in depth terrain. Mostly caves, though. Still nice though.
I decided to explore some of the caves I had spawned into after a small bit of mass deforestation, and the caves are bloody massive. It's like everything is a ravine or something. I didn't explore too far though, as I still don't even have any armour and am relying on stone tools. Can't really afford to take risks.
I also got an earful of one of the new background tracks. It gave me vague Pokemon diamond and Pearl vibes. It was some good stuff.
Overall, I dig what I've seen so far. Can't wait to start digging deeper.

A tip for exploring underwater cave systems (yes those exist now theyre awesome) and by extension ocean floors, a good trick I learned from a friend is to bring doors.
Doors take up space and as a result become portable air pockets for you to refill your air gauge and mine ores faster (since you're technically not underwater, all of the blocks outside of your air pocket mine normally). Once you get the water breathing and aqua affinity enchantments, this becomes less necessary, but it is an extremely useful method of underwater exploration.

Yeah, I found some of the underwater caves pretty soon, one right under my house funnily enough, and they are massive.
The door method seems to be a lot safer than what I was doing, taking some magma blocks from the entrance of the underwater cave and using those for air and light lol. I just assumed they had patched that out. Might have to start making use of it.

Huh. I haven't really gone beyond 1.12.2 and even then haven't played in years. I should probably try out the new versions huh...
