I really don't like unfriending people but if you can't respect me, how can I respect you? The sweeping generalizations again...

Disagreements are inevitable and I realize everyone has different views. What I consider disrespectful others may not. However I try to be fair and civil. If I ask someone nicely to please stop saying something that I find disrespectful and they ignore it and continue doing more of the same that is when I have to end it. For example I've talked about making sweeping generalizations before. It's important to make a distinction between "some" and "all" because there are always exceptions to the rule. Hence the reason to choose your words wisely otherwise it comes across as stereotyping or even hateful.
