I will always be my mother,
no matter how hard I try.
I put many miles between us.
I cut my hair, change my clothes,
wash my skin to remove her,
but she still lingers.
I peel off my flesh to scrub
her out from underneath,
but she's in my bones. She is under
every fingernail, in every pore.
No matter how much I pull and prod
at my face, no matter how many
shapes I contort my body into,
I look into the mirror and her eyes
bore into my skull.
