Two Verses about Identity and Purpose

Identity is a tricky thing for some. There are those who consider an identity that is not their own to be scary. Identity is not something someone chooses. It is the will of the Lord what a person is like. You can choose to be a kind person, you can choose to look at your fellow man with love, but you cannot choose what color your skin is, your gender, or who you are attracted to. It is not our will to decide what those who are different from us are wrong about.

I was raised Christian and, although I would not consider myself one now, I do find myself comforted by the verses that I learned in my youth. Here are two that keep me strong when I feel that my sense of self is failing.

Romans 9:20-21
"On the contrary, who are you, O man, who answers back to God? The thing molded will not say to the molder, “Why did you make me like this,” will it? Or does not the potter have a right over the clay, to make from the same lump one vessel for honorable use and another for common use?"

My destiny may not be to do great things. Maybe I was put on this Earth to do common things. We all have our purpose, mine may not be the same as yours and yours may not be the same as anyone else's. There is nothing wrong with that. We are all built for different purposes.

Psalms 139:14
"I will give thanks to You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made; Wonderful are Your works, And my soul knows it very well."

It is a beautiful thing that I exist, that you exist, and that we exist at the same time in a way that we can feasibly find each other. The world is a strange and wonderful place. It is terrifying, but it is my home. I cannot help but feel pride and love for my fellow man. We are all intricately crafted to have connections with others. It is part of our purpose and our soul knows it.

At the end of the day, our identity is fearfully and wonderfully crafted by the Lord. We can put our burdens unto him, but perhaps we were simply made for a different purpose than what we originally assumed we were.
