This chapter starts kind of abruptly. We are introduced to a vampire named Tanya who has a bit of a crush on Edward and has been making some advances on him. The Good Pg. 23-27 We get some really good characterization of Tanya. She’s energetic and sensual and confident but also has some insecurities. Pg. 27-31 I love the dynamic Edward, Alice, Jasper, Rosale and Emmet have. Aside from the couple thing they really do feel like siblings. Pg. 30 - 31 I hate to admit it but I really am starting to like the Cullen “kids.” They have some semi-witty banter between each other. Sometimes it comes off cringey but there were a few parts that really were semi-entertaining. Emmitt really shines here and I like his easy-going nature. The Bad Pg. 23-27 The Denali vampires kind of annoy me. They stopped killing people because they liked having sex with human men…? Okay well Lucas liked having sex with men, women and anything in between and he STILL kills them. There was apparently no event or catalyst to the Denali’s growing a conscience outside of…liking sex? It felt like a lot of context was given through dialogue in the beginning of this chapter. That can be a good thing sometimes but not gonna lie, I kind of wanted to see this play out. I wanted to see what led up to Edward burying himself in snow and Tanya apologizing for making him uncomfortable. Give me more Tanya! Also some of the dialogue was awkward. The annoying thing is I didn’t HATE this scene. I liked it. It was just too short. There was a lot of good characterization and the dynamic Edward and Tanya have is interesting. I was almost kind of liking Edward but then he started thinking about Bella again. Ugh! Apparently chapter two starts in a flashback? I can’t tell. There’s a weird time skip from where Edward is buried in snow, saying goodbye to Tanya and then he’s with Alice. Pg. 32 - 34 Aaaaand we are back to obsessing over Bella! Ugh! This is so boring! I continue to hate Jessica. She is almost as obnoxious as Bella. I am BORED! It is taking multiple pages just to figure out if Edward is going to class. It’s written to be suspenseful but we KNOW what’s going to happen and that is NOTHING!!!! Literally NOTHING except Edward being in pain and a baby about everything. Also WHY do they have to go to high school? The funny and stupid and obnoxious thing about the Cullens is that they are immortal, immensely over-powered, gorgeous vampires and yet they adhere to human rules. They don’t have to. They don’t have to live in a small town. They don’t have to go to class. They don’t have to do most of these things and YET they do. It doesn’t benefit them to be such sticklers for the rules and it makes them look lame. These vampires are lame. It is almost impressive how lame Stephanie made VAMPIRES! Pg. 35- 45 OH MY GOD! BELLA LOOKED UP AT EDWARD WHEN HE SAT DOWN! SHE’S SO MYSTERIOUS! Edward is way too concerned about her LITERALLY just looking at him. She looked at you because you are a weirdo watching her doodle. Also you are attractive, Edward! You made an old lady think horrible things about you! Why are you THIS surprised? Edward bluntly says she’s been the center of attention and the whole town has been waiting for her arrival. Bella is living a narcissist’s wet dream. This is 100% how narcissists want to be treated. I hate Bella. I think I hate her in part because she makes me think of my ex mom (I say ex because she’s a narcissistic POS). She always needed to be the center of attention. She expected me to constantly be fawning over her and try to make her happy. Bella is the WORST! I AM SO BORED! I AM SO BORED! I DON’T CARE THAT BELLA HATES SNOW! I DON’T CARE ABOUT HOW SHE FEELS ABOUT PHIL! I DON’T CARE! Maybe if she didn’t feel “fine” about Phil I would care. If he were the best step dad in the world and she missed him or if he was an abusive POS then I would care more about Bella’s thoughts. But NO! This is so BORING!!!! Pg. 45-49 UGH! I’m bored. Thank god this chapter is over. Why am I doing this to myself? Overall Thoughts There are some good characters in this book but so little focus is given to them because Bella is just sooooo special! This could actually be a good book if Bella wasn’t in it. She sucks all the life from this book (haha see what I did there? :-P). She is so bland yet everyone makes such a big deal out of her. It’s like reading people freak out over a beige sock. Omg this sock is the best! I love its color! I want to wear it! I would literally DIE for this sock! This sock is mine! No! It’s mine! It’s a SOCK! It has done nothing to earn this amount of adoration!!!! Bella literally has done NOTHING to earn this level of obsession from everyone at her school! I could see this kind of thing if she were a celebrity or done something impressive but no. Stephanie did a good job with the side characters that weren’t constantly in a state of infatuation over Bella. Emmitt is actually a good character. He has a distinct voice and word choice. So he can go on the list of Cullens I don’t hate. Cullens I hate Carlisle Esme Cullens I don’t hate and semi-like Emmitt Jasper Rosalie Cullens I love Alice —------------------- Rosalie is not nice but she is an okay-written character. She plays kind of an antagonistic role and it fits her well. She’s kind of a stereotype of a bimbo, bitter blond but people like that do exist. Bella is the worst character. She makes everything around her boring. I think if Stephanie had written this to write a good story instead of trying to fulfill some weird narcissistic fantasy, it would actually be an amazing series. Fuck. So much wasted potential!
