Satanic Panic

As much as I enjoy letting people believe that I'm the type of Satanist who worships the Devil and curses everybody who wrongs me, a lot of people are actually interested in what Satanism is and what we do, so I'm going to info-dump and label it as a learning opportunity. There are different paths of Satanism but the one I'm going to be discussing specifically here is LaVeyan Satanism, founded by Anton LaVey.

LaVeyan Satanists do not believe in Satan as an entity that truly exists and we don't worship him as a deity but he stands as a more symbolic figure. Satan is a symbol for human individualism and freedom; we, as people, are our own Gods and we do not live for a higher-being, but we live for ourselves and enjoy our life until we die. LaVeyan Satanists are typically atheists and LaVey specifically did not believe in an afterlife. He used Satanism as a means of dismantling established religions and saw it as rational nature, contrasting the supernaturalist irrationality of other religions.

He embraced the label 'Satanist' as it shocked people into thinking, which is especially why I enjoy people's assumptions about it. When asked about his religion, he said that "the reason it's called Satanism is because it's fun, it's accurate and it's productive." In some of his works such as the Satanic bible, the LaVeyan Satanist's view of god is described as a Satanist's true "self" and a projection of their own personality rather than an external deity; he uses the words 'god' and 'Satan' interchangeably, viewing both as personifications of human nature. One of the parts of the Satanic bible I appreciate the most is that LaVey often leaves Satan up to interpretation in every passage and some of his Church members believed Satan to be a literal being - it is to be believed that he did this to avoid driving away theistic Satanists from his church and reinforce their self-interest.

Even the reason he called the Church of Satan what it is was to spite Christians and their church. He used Christianity as a negative mirror for his new faith and rejected their beliefs. It views major religions as a negative force on humanity - it promotes herd-mentality and idealism and irrationality and moulds people into ignorance and stupidity. Satanism places emphasis on the carnal rather than the spiritual.
