I have a very eclectic and diverse range of musical influences. As long as I find it to be pure and full of integrity. I shift from different seasons in my taste when I'm more drawn to certain genres. Within the past 12+ years or so it keeps revolving. Lately I've been drawn to world, fusion instrumental and classical and jazz to a degree. Specifically traditional classical middle eastern music I find to be healing. There are particular theories behind this involving being tuned to natural Earth tones. The tuning can be pure because they don't often deviate from the specific pitch set or raga. Western music is compromised for modulation of all keys without encountering any dissonance of wolf intervals. Upon utilizing the Schumann resonance (Earth's frequency). I tuned my custom fretted guitar (similar to the fretting of sitar to obtain the pure frequencies for raga like authenticity) to C5=524hz which is a multiple of said resonance (7.83hz x 67 = 524.61hz). Today out of curiosity I took my tuner app and noticed that the great masters Ravi Shankar and Ali Akbar Khan had a pitch that correlated to that same frequency. I was pleasantly surprised.
I've always been fascinated by technique and intricacies of music. Whether it be physical or pitch related. They are the tools to be utilized by the imagination. To question and push the boundaries, defy cliches, innovate and connect with higher self or the soul. In the physical realm we have hurdles to jump in order to compete with the imagination. I'm not as interested in academia and heavily established theory. That being said I think if you can establish a basis or theory that is personal and works for you, you can build on that foundation and let the intuition or mind's eye take over as the guide. Here are some recent example's of what I'm talking about.
The first is Ravi Shankar and Ali Akbar Khan: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I1nKVExbewM&list=PLk38NUNifw82mETqzdUq_GcxrRf2hyf0d&index=34
The second is the late great Shawn Lane who I consider to be possibly the most technically accomplished guitarist whoever lived. The difference between him and other players is that while being incredibly technically advanced his playing was still very dynamic and musical. He never fell into conventional patterns and cliche licks. He kept things unpredictable by using unorthodox rhythmic groupings. He was also very humble and open minded and happened to be influenced by middle eastern music as well as jazz and fusion players. In this video he really gets in depth about the subjects I talked about, technique, tuning, middle eastern music, his approach and ideas, etc.
