And I guess some other types of music too, but emo seemed all the rage when I was in my late teens. To be honest, I kinda liked the look, both emo girls and boys looked hot, but I never dared to listen to the music.
And the reason is cause some guys at school gatekept me years earlier. In my younger teens when nu-metal was all the rage, I got into Papa Roach but I was a shy quiet kid. So some guys in my class wouldn't believe me and started testing me on my Papa Roach knowledge.
But then I got into more metal through the internet, stuff from the 80s and 90s, I got so much into it that I stopped cutting my hair. And people online who were into these bands were even more into gatekeeping. "All radio sucks these days", so if it was on the radio I was supposed to hate it I guess. "Nu-metal is not real metal", so yeah I definitely stopped listening to that stuff.
To be honest I didn't make any friends into metal on the internet, I just read comments on forums and stuff without participating, cause I was too scared they were also gonna accuse me of being a poser and test me. But at the same time I did care about not being a poser, so I didn't wanna hang out with kids who are too obviously into different kind of music, such as emo kids, even though I thought they looked awesome.
In the end I actually don't know a single emo song, cause if someone brought it up I'd immediately say I'm not into that, even though I never tried. I'll look up a playlist on Spotify one of these days, as I have been doing with a bunch of genres that are not metal last year.
