Lilith

They called her Lilith because they needed a name for the kind of woman who would not stay where she was put.

She was never particularly cruel.

That was the misunderstanding.

She simply did not know how to belong to someone else.

Lilith liked midnight better than morning. She liked locked gardens, black coffee, silver rings, old songs playing through thin apartment walls. She liked beautiful things most when they were slightly broken.

People often mistook her silence for obedience.

It wasn't.

She was simply deciding whether they deserved an answer.

She had been told that a woman should be softer. Easier. More forgiving. More willing to bend.

Lilith tried.

Once.

She hated herself for it.

So she stopped.

There was something almost frightening about watching her walk away from a room without asking anyone to follow. She never slammed doors. Never threatened to leave.

She simply left.

And somehow that was worse.

She knew people would call her selfish.

Let them.

She had spent too many years confusing self-sacrifice with goodness.

Now she wanted things.

She wanted long nights and red lipstick and train tickets bought without a destination. She wanted to fall in love without disappearing inside somebody else's life. She wanted to be remembered without needing to be possessed.

And if somebody loved her?

Wonderful.

If they didn't?

The moon would still rise.

The roses would still open.

The city would still glitter after rain.

Lilith had finally learned that being alone was not the same thing as being unwanted.

Sometimes it was simply freedom wearing a quieter dress.

So she walked into the night with her hair loose around her shoulders and a smile she didn't owe anyone.

Somewhere behind her, someone whispered her name.

She didn't turn around.

For once,

she already knew who she was.

WOAH! Awesome poetry, and pretty dang inspiring. Lilith taught me that no matter what happens, the sun still sets and the moon still rises. This poem is moving!
