Good morning spacehey nation
2hurot is so bad this summer that it's all I can do if someone hasn't prompted me to do something else. Wake up, pace to OSTs, think of hypotheticals, continue to think while eating, dissect a theme, play a game, fail the game, try again, draw characters, and go to sleep. I love how quiet this site is
"Epic" is S tier equivalent. "Good" is A tier equivalent. "Nitpicky" is B/C tier equivalent, with a few complaints. "Uncomfy" is D/F tier equivalent, with many complaints. If "I don't care", it's because the game fails to immerse me for excessive periods of time, which is unusual for a game in this series. PC98 is bottom by default. Most of my complains aren't actual flaws, but an observation on how the game "feels". Feelings are determined by how it looks, how my hands are oriented when playing, and the presence or absence of gameplay factors such as a hitbox, auto collect line, resource availability, etc. Also, I suck at the game, so the speed in which I 1cc'd it on easy mode (if I ever did) definitely influences these results. I see that 17.5, 18.5, 19, and 20 are not included, so I will just add those into my rant below.
Epic:
- IN: One of my favorite soundtracks. I love how dark the UI is. I love the variety of playable characters and abilities. I love the last word mechanic and how it holds your hand when deathbombing. I love games with Marisa glitches. I love the time mechanic. It wasn't hard to 1cc.
- PCB: Another favorite OSTs. Trying not to sound repetitive; I prefer dark UIs over bright ones. Supernatural border mode is cool. In theory, I would use it more often to avoid losing a life, but the activate at very inconvenient times, such as the start of a new stage or right after all the enemies leave/right before the boss arrives. Was easy to 1cc.
- DDC: I love the resource availability. I get a life or bomb every handful of seconds? Very convenient for someone as unskilled as I. OST is fine; I prefer every other one in the epic tier, as well as multiple others in the tiers below. Favorite stage theme is Magical Storm and favorite boss theme is Reverse Ideology. The instruments (Tsukumos/Raiko) have very nice themes and the composition of the fight is very good. I never 1cc'd this, but I did finish the game.
- LOLK: Funny acronym. I got into Touhou sometime after this game released. Technically I showed up in time for UM, but I saw 暁Records release WARNING×WARNING×WARNING and looked into the lore behind that. The checkpoint mechanic is fun and all, but this is one of the hardest games ever. My last checkpoint is currently at Hell Sign "Flash and Stripe" and I will never get past it. Doremy's spellcards also tripped me up. I vividly remember a day during Lockdown where I was sweating trying to get through Ringo's second spellcard. TLDR: I suck at the game. Soundtrack is really good, and Reisen's shottypes and abilities are quite interesting.
Good:
- MoF: Marisa glitch is nice and something I utilize every single run. MarisaB glitch + soundtrack is carrying this game. The bomb system is interesting-- on one hand, I don't have to worry about dying with 6 bombs in hand. On the other hand, I can only use 2 bombs at a time whilst efficiently keeping power. The OST is carrying this game. Amazing themes and rain sounds in the menu theme.
- SA: Soundtrack is amazing, stage composition is okay. I got very close to the end but didn't make it and it leaves me bitter. I really love the variety of playable characters and shottypes, if only I was good at them all. Pretty solid
- UFO: The OST puts it at Epic-tier but the difficulty drops it to nitpicky tier, leaving it at average Good. I'm not a fan of the light background, light UI, light bullets. I'm sure the screen darkens as the game progresses, as all of them do, I just can't get that far. Stage 3 boss with stage 4 behavior...
- AOCF: It's my favorite fighting game, by far. The art, the music, the lineup. None of the fighting games are so good that I'd put it in the epic tier/deem it better than all the shmups.
