Our Last Adventure

We were inseparable, or at least that's what I thought..
When I was a child I moved to the small town of Kilbourne, Illinois and I knew absolutely nobody. Then one day I met the boys. Branson & Keane, still in their cribs. A couple years passed and since our parents were friends we spent a lot of time together.

As we got older we stared exploring the town, playing in the woods next to their house, or just playing video games. It was great! We made forts, protected their tree house in the great Air Soft war, even took the old base from the ball diamond so we could replace it with a new one. Someone stole that, but eventually they moved off to Havana, Illinois.

I saw them in school every now and then, but I didn't hang out with them for about two years since the move. We were a couple grades apart though so when I started high school I didn't see them in school for a few years either. I started hanging out at their place as much as I could, but I couldn't do it nearly as much when we were kids. I knew we were growing apart so I thought up a plan.

The Coal docks was really low around that time which was a rare site for anyone. I stayed the night at their house, talked over plans to go on a small adventure like we used to, and the next day we set out to see it. When we woke up the sun was shinning and we knew it was gonna be a good day.

We set out and made our way about a mile and a half until we reached what is now known as Bellrose Meadows and made our way down to the Coal docks. "It was beautiful" I wish I had a phone then to take pictures. Most of the water was gone yet there was still little steams of water coming out of the ground and multiple spots. Chucks of clay, petrified wood, and even coal could be saw sticking out of the ground. It was so low we could walk across without a worry in the world.

After we made it across we saw an old set of railroad tracks showing through the trees, but they didn't lead to anywhere.. Behind the tracks was a small little dirt road that was over run by a beautiful bunch of wild mint. The smell alone was heaven.

We popped our heads out of the trees to notice we were at the Bidocs. Luckily since it was Sunday no one was there. We continued down the tree line so we weren't technically on the Bidoc property. On the edge by the river was a incline that led to a giant ledge and we just sat there staring out at the river and I took a deep sigh realizing this is most likely our last adventure. It was calm moment for us, a sad moment for me, but then we looked over. Right there at the edge was a barge pusher and someone sitting in a chair looking right at us. We weren't sure what to do so we did the only thing teens knew to do when there could be trouble.

We booked it! We had to be careful while we were running down the incline since three out of four of the sides of it was surrounded by water but we made it down. We rushed back into the trees and followed the dirt road which led to that trail I talked about my before. We ran out of the meows, down the street, passed the housing units, until we reached a cornfield. We stood there laughing even though we couldn't breathe and then we made our way back to their house putting an end to our adventure. After that day, I've made it over a few more times, but it's just felt awkward. They dedicated themselves to sports and we got to the point where we barley even talked. I moved off to Champaign and didn't see them again till an old friends funeral. They knew Ashton more than I did, but I still broke down in tears at his casket. He was 16, Branson and Keane was pretty hurt as well and I gave them and his family my condolences. We talk every now and then and run into each other around town, but that's about it. Sadly I've realized now that I'm an adult, I'm more friends with their parents then I am with the boys anymore. That's okay though, we've been talking about hanging out sometime, who knows maybe one day we could go on another adventure. Till then, I'll be hopeful.
