In Another City

It's 6:45 in the morning on a Saturday.

The sound of a faint alarm sound muffled between layers of blankets hit snooze, until the sound of nature surrounds the window. The birds became a natural alarm system that is almost ritualistic despite being in the center of a city across the bay in California. The city was already awake, metro stations and traffic lights. People passing each other on sidewalks to get to where they need to go. You can hear the trollies from down the road and the nature surrounded by buildings and college dorms.

A single college dorm suite can be one of the loneliest blessings for someone who's never lived alone. For someone who's never explored the city you would expect Lydia to be striving for what's right in front of her.  Instead she's looking down at a blank screen contemplating in her head what she's going to wear today.

(This excerpt is from a short story I am currently working on for one of my literature courses. This is introduced as an introductory prologue that introduces the first chapter of the short story).
