(SOLVED) PSA: Suspicious individuals adding and DMing you

Hi guys. Hope everyone's been doing well and being somewhat normal. It is currently Sunday and it is past 7 PM for me.

There are so many more things I could write and blog about, and maybe I will, but, right now, I'm writing about this. The title is quite self-explanatory.

So, about a week ago, on April 12th, I was checking SpaceHey while on a long drive home when I received a friend request here. Here are the characteristics of the person that sent the request at the time:

1. Male.
2. 23 years old.
3. Had a Pokemon profile picture- particularly a stylized drawing of Skeledirge.
4. Claimed to be from the USA.
5. Had a very plain, unfinished-looking account and a couple of friends.
6. Information on this guy's profile was quite barebones, but if I remember well, it had sports listed as one of the interests.

Now, I have no access to the message exchange, but it went something like this ( H is for the stranger, M is for me ):

M: Hi! Are you a Pokemon fan?

H: Yeah

H: Where are you from btw

M: I'm from Europe.

H: Cool, I'm from USA

M: Lucky lucky, I wanna live there.

H: I don't get notifications here btw do you have discord

M, blatantly lying: Sorry, I don't! I stopped using it a while ago, SpaceHey is the only social media I use haha

H: Ohh ok

H: How old are you btw

M: I'm old haha

H: How old?

M: Dude, did you even look at my profile before adding me?

M: Why did you even add me if you didn't look at my profile?

M: You dork

After this exchange, I was promptly blocked. The conversation disappeared and, after I looked up the guy's profile name (which I no longer remember), I received the error page which told me I was blocked. No biggie- I could tell what was going on and was more than happy to waste this guy's time and mildly insult him.

Now, getting added and messaged by randoms on SpaceHey is nothing out of the ordinary, and getting added on social media and asked to move off-platform is also nothing new. It costs you nothing to not be nosy and to just ignore these people, but it really makes you wonder what their motives are.

However, if I had a coin for each time this thing has happened to me on a Sunday afternoon, I'd have two coins- not a lot, but it is weird that it happened twice.

History tends to repeat itself, so, Barry, too, has me blocked now, but here are the characteristics of Barry's profile from before Barry blocked me:

1. Male.
2. 23 years old.
3. Has a Pokemon profile picture- a stylized drawing of Ogerpon and Pecharunt.
4. Claims to be from Alabama, USA.
5. Has a very plain, unfinished profile (first it had a Windows XP layout and then a plain black layout) and a couple of friends- the number steadily rose as time went on.
6. Information on this guy's profile is quite barebones, but I remember it had sports listed as one of the interests.

Intrigued and in the mood to waste yet another person's time, I decide to indulge Barry's painfully dry IM conversation starter ( B for Barry, M for me ):

M: Let me guess. You want to know where I'm from, you want to know how old I am, and you want to have my Discord @?

Blllocked. Just like that. For what reason? I did not even get to the most fun part- the namecalling!

I swear, what is the goal? What is the next step of the operation? If I get another add and IM like this, I am actually going to investigate. I have a throwaway Discord account and I swear I am going to use it. I will entertain these guys' (or this guy's?!) wishes and I will give them the @.

Spiral, Spiral, what is the point of this blog then?!

The point of this blog is to draw attention to the suspicious individuals and suspicious activity that are still present on SpaceHey despite the site going invite-only! A lot of the people on this website are young, impressionable, gullible and not careful enough. Someone might look at a message exchange like this and think "What could go wrong?" or "I am quite lonely and I want to talk to someone, why not give it a try!" but could potentially get themselves into a world of trouble. Call me a paranoiac and an idiot but I watch and follow a lot of online-safety related things online and have learned to not trust anyone or anything I see out here in this great colorful digital sea.

Also, truthfully, I typed all of this out because I just felt like writing something but not something that deep/personal.

So, Barry and the other guy, whatever your name was, if you have something to say, please, do correct me either in IMs or in the comments of this post. Seriously, I am quite intrigued and just want to know what was the strat, you know! Very very curious! ^_^
