I watched a youtube video so I'm an expert now.
In an experiment they strapped frosted goggles to limit their vision and they still found their way home, but it made it harder for them to find out exactly where to land once they got close. Making use of landmarks is useful for them, but poor vision doesn't hinder their homing ability much at all.
Their magnetic sensor is not that important for navigation. They severed the nerve connection from the magnetite in their beak to the brain and all but one pigeon returned to their home in under 24 hours. But after severing the sense of smell of another group of pigeons only 4 out of 24 managed to return in under 24 hours. Surprisingly their nose and ambient smells are much more important for navigation than their internal compass.
The other big one is ambient noise. Pigeons can hear into the infrasound range (20Hz all the way down to 0.05Hz). These sounds can propagate for thousands of kilometers. Pigeon hearing is so good they can hear tectonic plates and by taking note of the ambient sounds they can map where their home is and surrounding areas.

Pigeons are so cool. They seem to be so fun to have as pets. You know when they live on your roof in a coop and get to fly around as they please but always come back to your home. Like imagine just seeing my little pigeon pal flying around while I'm at work or something.
also what the flip pigeons have natural magnets in their beak.
If you feed them they will follow you around. They remember people
Also the only thing pigeons need now is a GPS receiver

Still pigeons are absolute shit when it comes to making a nest (im only talking qbout city pigeons)
Their natural nest habitat was flat ground on rocky hilltops. As long as the nest prevents the eggs from rolling away its good enough. Pingeneering is best engineering
