i think u can read rosseau and like someones already said voltaire without much background needed, maybe some plato? i think it wasnt until like the 20th century that there was real divide between philosophers from different countries, so maybe thinking in movements would be better, like rationalists, idealists, and that means reading german french etc philosophers
if u are interested in existentialism, the u should check our Nausea by Jaun Paul Sartre, it's a great book to start French philosophy, or The Stranger by Albert Camus

if u start w him, do not go with existentialism is a humanism
