It's become quite clear with recent suspensions that the currently active mods do not care about addressing problems. In fact, they are actively suspending people who call attention to those problems. Whether it be harassment or bullying, nudity, and even CP, the user who raised awareness for it gets suspended. In fact, we are being told by mods themselves that so-called "call out posts" are no longer allowed.
Great Sage was banned yesterday for asking people to block a user who used slurs, a DIRECT violation of SpaceHey's rules -- yet that user was not penalized.
This is not the first incident, either. My friend Zigzag Buster made a post warning other users about a white supremacist who targeted them, with screenshot proof of the messages they were sent. They had previously made a report about the user, but mods did nothing. Even though the racist user was (eventually) banned, mods also deleted Zigzag's post.
Today, I learned that even child pornography is being swept under the rug by moderators. This crosses a hard line and takes the situation from questionable at best, to unacceptable.
As a reminder, Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act provides some immunity from liability to moderators for the purpose of policing their groups -- however, this ONLY applies to actions taken to remove, block or restrict that content, as is their job as moderators:
(c)Protection for “Good Samaritan” blocking and screening of offensive material
(2)Civil liability
No provider or user of an interactive computer service shall be held liable on account of—
(A)any action voluntarily taken in good faith to restrict access to or availability of material that the provider or user considers to be obscene, lewd, lascivious, filthy, excessively violent, harassing, or otherwise objectionable, whether or not such material is constitutionally protected; or
(B)any action taken to enable or make available to information content providers or others the technical means to restrict access to material described in paragraph (1).[1]

If moderators fail to remove illegal content and material, they can and are held liable. Furthermore, if they -knowingly- allow CP to exist on their platform, particularly in a manner that can be accessed, possessed, or distributed by other people, they are actively committing a crime as defined by law. They also qualify as having "knowingly received/possessed" the material if they view a report containing CP and do not take action. First-time offenders could face a minimum of 15 to 30 years in prison.

The question is clear -- are moderators going to continue to penalize users for calling attention to their inaction? Are they going to continue to allow problem users who violate rules to do as they will, while punishing those who speak out? How much of their userbase will they alienate in favor of agitators?

I'm not even joking, one time i saw a profile thats entire layout was just plastered with gore and the "music" playing on the profile was some kind of execution audio. And for some fucking reason the 'report' button wasn't showing up. I know that i sound like some creepypasta protag, but i've actually seen that shit. And i get that this is a pretty indie project, but PLEASE monitor people's layouts, spacehey monitors.
Yep I believe it; I've had several other people say the same. Same with porn layouts/profiles as well. And yeah, when they make the layouts they remove the report button -- which is ALSO against spacehey rules.

Great blog! We need to talk more about the moderation topic because, well, I could understand that SpaceHey is a project made by a small team, but it's the most popular one and has the biggest community of all the retro social media that exist.If An or the person responsible for the moderation isn't doing their job, I fear that the site will have another wave of gore-nazi-weirdshit accounts that fill the whole site with illegal and harmful material. Spacehey already has a bad reputation because of their lack of moderation because of previous events, and if this continues without a response or a real action plan, it will happen again, and idk if the community will raise their voices and protest for a solution, or everyone will leave the platform because of that.It's sad because I love this website; it's like a second opportunity to live in the old internet without all the algorithms and soulless AI-generated slop content created just for the likes and follows. :(

Both terms are used in legal cases and legislation to refer to the same thing.

Ironically mimicking the old wild west of the internet they're trying to copy, just in a less favorable way. Hope the main creators come to their senses and realize whats going on, if they even care anymore. Thanks as always, Agent Scully.
