torn between technology and the rejection of such

My dad gave me his old smart watch, one of those that track your steps, heart beat and tell you the weather if you want. I set it up just for fun. Downloading the corresponding app felt like selling my soul and potential first born. Letting it access location, contacts and who knows what.

The thing is, on one hand I hate technology like that. I'm willingly handing big companies all my data which they sell and/or feed to their massive data banks. I am a product. I'm agreeing to be monitored.

On the other hand it's a cool gadget. I'm moderately into fitness, sometimes I like to see how many steps I did or how many calories I burned. But do I really tho? Isn't that all just some sort of propaganda to make me buy such things and sell myself? Do I really like knowing all these things? I'm by no means an athlete nor do I have any conditions, so does knowing these things even improve anything for me?

I guess I could only wear occasionally, if I go for a run.

It is exactly propaganda and nothing else. They want to convince you that you really need the smart watch, the phone, the bluetooth speaker, etc.

Also for this case: If you don´t want to log in an app you have to buy several devices that only have one purpose at a time. It´s a dilemma.

I mean your phone has all of your data anyway and you can simply download an app to count your step.

I think the only people safe are old people that never got in touch with media at all lol.

Wow, I have the same dilemma, it's crazy! I also really like technology, but it makes me feel awful knowing that all those companies have so much of my information that they use to sell me things I don't need at prices I can't afford. The saddest thing is knowing that nowadays, thanks to how essential technology and the internet are in daily life, it's impossible to escape this loss of privacy. (Sorry if my English is bad, I use a translator :P)

yea, totally. I wish I could just jailbreak everything and use an open-source software. Unfortunately I think my tech skills are not good enough for that and the standard system is sadly also very convenient
