women and computers, and on the stereotype of tech being a male thing

it's very bothersome to me, as a woman, that being into computers / tech is considered a "male" interest or hobby, because there is a very extensive history between women and computers that seems to just get vastly ignored because of some male nerds now. in fact, the first ever computer programmer was a woman, the six programmers of the ENIAC were all women, and the majority of computing workers in the 20th century were always women. the term "kilogirl" literally came about because of these female programmers being regarded as the only ones capable of the tedious job of computing. in fact the very term "software engineer" was coined by a woman, Margaret Hamilton, the same woman whose software carried Apollo 11 to the Moon

ever since the beginning, with 1800s weaving machines like the Jacquard Loom, technology was intertwined with women. and then in 1843 with Ada Lovelace's work on the Analytical Engine, the 1920s with telephone switchboards, and the 90s with Sadie Plant's Zeros + Ones. i will not take any accusations just because i am a woman who posts about old technology and computers. thank you
