Thoughts on Gotham Knights

Gotham Knights is one of the more recent "Batman Arkham"-like game to be released, but you can get for surprisingly cheap due to its lackluster reception. I got it for FREE during GameStop's Black Friday sales, so that's how I wound up with it.

Essentially, it's like if Batman Arkham Knight didn't have Batman, was constantly pressuring you to play online, and was just kinda... ok. The combat is ok, but doesn't feel as satisfying as the Arkham trilogy. You don't start off with any ability to glide, which also makes navigation kinda stale. The story also is a little lacking. Overlooking the shoehorned in social commentary, I REALLY don't buy Batman losing a fight to Ra's al Ghul at the beginning of the game, but that's the only way they could set up a universe in which you only play as his sidekicks.

Yes, if you were unaware, the main gimmick to Gotham Knights is Batman dies and you can select between Batgirl, Knightwing, the Red Hood, and Robin. I thought I'd happily switch between these characters, but so far I haven't found much of a reason to (and it's honestly not worth the inconvenience most the time).

That all being said, its been fun. Not Batman Arkham fun, but fun. I like unlocking some cosmetics, getting a little story as I progress, and thinking about what the next Batman game could be like... Gotham's use of color around the city is actually really well done imo. I also appreciate the physical release and offline capabilities despite the heavy focus on online play (which I haven't even touched).

If you've played Gotham Knights what did you think? I'd say it's worth a look if you can grab it cheap.
