Can a snake dream of wings? I am bound to the earth, cursed to slither upon this itchy soil I gaze at the angels in the sky Wings flapping, oh so splendid! I too wish to fly amongst them But I am a wretched serpent Born a sinner, born wrong Never meant to taste freedom Still I dream of wings and sky I build my wings of twig and web, Hopeful I can grab that dream I stare at the cliff in front of me Ready to fly with my simple wings I jump, I spread my wings, I fall The web entangle me as I descend The twigs pierce my body like spears I scream and roar, struggling to be free My blood flowing like a crimson river I, the snake, truly bound to the earth Oh, Icarus! I long to take your place. With wax wings, you touched the sun I know why you laugh as you fall, Icarus Although a fool, you die with a smile You have tasted true freedom, Icarus I too wish to die a fool fulfilled. So why? Why must I watch others die joyously? I saw your body hit the ground, Icarus Your melted wings just out of reach I cry, I thrash, ripping my own flesh Your wings seem to escape my grip How long must I continue to fight? Is truly a sin to dream of wings? My body tires and my vision blurs Tired of fighting, sick of struggling Can I, the snake dream of wings, When they are trapped to the dirt? When the gods deny them flight? Doomed to eternally struggle Always made the loser, the fool Yes, a snake can dream of wings. Their fate is none but their own So I struggle and self mutilate; All to get closer to those wings. A lowly snake seeking to defy gods For I know when I gain my wings, None shall be my equal in all creation. I will be the brightest star in the sky I will eat the sun and take her place I will kill every god and strike fear So I ignore my body's scream of pain; So I ignore my broken scarred heart I ignore all those who mock my dream I suffer, I bleed, I fight, I bite. All because I, the snake let myself dream of wings.
