painting the landscape of her dreams, an eye waits, ready for commands. to open or to close? it would do anything for her. she gently holds and guides it to see a new image of an image it already saw, but it’s different because she says it is. it will see it too. the landmarks captured with its eye may last a lifetime or even more. its eye is an extension of her memory. oh, how wonderful it is to hold so much importance. oh, how much it loves the value it has gained through her warm embrace. what would it be without her? how it could it ever matter without her? the bond is strong until it grows old. its eye can’t see like it once did. in its younger days, it could do so much. how useless it’s grown, and oh, how impatient she turns at its failings, but no apology would ever be enough.
her love was all that mattered, but an eye cannot effectively communicate the reciprocation of it all. it hoped that being reliable was the greatest demonstration of love, but that was never the case. what good is an eye without the approval of the one it loves? all the memories mean nothing when it fails to bring joy in new ones. she is without. what benefit is there in her staying in a one-sided love? she leaves. there is no fault to be assigned. it was never enough for her. how could it be?
painting the painting of her landscape with an eye ready for commands, it doesn’t listen the same, but that’s fine. it gets the job done. the old eye sits knowing it has done what was tasked of it. things are better this way. her dissatisfaction is justified. what good is an eye when it cannot do what an eye it meant to? the eye could never have fulfilled her. this is what’s best for her. if it really loved her, it would let her go. it would let her be happy. it’s what she deserves.
an eye placed on the shell fixed on its exterior with only darkness shining through. a shelf is nice because it’s so. a shelf is nice because there’s beauty in a shelf. the shelf is nice. it’s nice because it’s fine. it’s all fine because she is fine. if there was genuine love for her, its eye would grow content with the darkness. it would bother her it did not accept this fact. yes, the shelf is nice.
