thought experiment - what if none of it is "real"?

imagine you wake up tomorrow and find out that youre currently living in a simulated reality. youre given irrefutable proof, not just a gut feeling or a theory. somewhere in the real world another version of you is living in an induced coma living this life through simulation. you dont know why, you dont know anything about this "real" version of you-- maybe youre the last person alive in an apocalypse scenario, maybe you volunteered to escape a painful reality, maybe youre a criminal and this is your punishment. heres the catch: youre the only truly conscious being in the simulation. your loved ones, strangers, theyre all fabricated. they feel and act real but theyre not. everything you felt, your purpose, love, your morals, theyre all artifical. whether that makes them real or not is up to you.

there is no god here, theres no divine plan, just a world that runs on algorithms and code. but youre not told anything about the real world. you might wake up in a godless world, or not. 

all youre told is that you can exit the simulation at any point now that youre aware of it. if you do, youll permanently leave but you have no idea what youll return to. the simulation will end and the life you know now will be deleted. on the other hand, you can remain in the simulation fully aware that theres something more until your body in the real world dies. you can wait as long as youd like but you dont know when that will be, you might live another 80 years or it might end tomorrow.
