MEDIA LITERACY RANT

okay 3rd blog of the day but i was JUST REMINDED OF THIS. why the heck is media literacy getting so scarce online at the moment. i love hearing other peoples interpretations of media but it feels like nobody is interpreting ANYTHING anymore (im exaggerating but it feels a lot more prevalent now than it has been)!! i was rewatching the movie "i want to eat your pancreas" the other day, which if you havent seen it (maybe spoilers ahead, go watch it its really good) the title is referencing that its said if you eat a part of someone that their spirit will live with you forever + that if you have a diseased organ you're supposed to eat that same organ to heal it. this is also literally said by sakura at different points in the movie and then everything that happens relates it back to main characters story. the movie is so well done and theres so much to take away from it. like its fun and romance-y and all at some points but the characters are also just so REAL feeling and the story has a lot of depth... if you dont miss the point entirely.. there was a comment underneath of a guy like "its so weird why would you want to eat someones pancreas it makes no sense" which just feeels satire!! "its symbolism which means you have to look deeper to get a good idea of what she meant meaning that it wasnt explained well" ??? do we want everything to just be handed to us at surface level? i dont mean to sound like a big fat HATER here but is it not boring only reading/watching things where you dont even have to think?? dont get me wrong im not a media purist i also enjoy stuff like that from time to time but i really don't like the direction we're going.. things are starting feeling so surface level and shallow to fit with the trend of people just not caring for anything more. ive also seen a lot of cases of media that portrays some not so great things (think lolita or smth) being totally misinterpreted as defending the things it portrays. as if even mentioning an issue without outright saying I HATE PEDOS!! means the author intends to glorify it. it can get really frustrating sometimes because it feels like if something depicts any sort of controversial topic we're not allowed to enjoy it because you'll get lumped together with people actually defending the issue. and of course its a skill you have to build like any other but its one that is not being valued online. pleeeasse can we stop being so dimissive

anyways, this probably isnt very coherent but i hope it makes a little bit of sense.. LORD NIKON.. OUT!!

100% and its honestly so tragic. people used to engage with all kinds of media and if there were shows n such that made you uncomfortable, you'd simply ignore it/block it. nowadays there's a whole think piece or even call out written about you if you like a media that has anything deemed problematic.

there's a bigger issues underlying here, which is society's attempt to sensor anything that goes against what's seen as morally good. aka like /those/ kind of christians who historically shame or even kill people for doing things "against god". and we're seeing it in a new form here online. if you draw/write/consume media that goes against "morals" then people will try so hard to de-platform you or the creator of said content. it never used to be this way.

now there are exceptions of course, there's 100% people out there who DO condone/support the problematic content they enjoy OUTSIDE of just fiction and THAT is absolutely a major problem. but lumping people who enjoy freaky fiction in with ACTUAL pedos and freaks is scary. i've seen innocent people doxed over this kind of stuff while real pedos/freaks skitter past the lime light because they're good at hiding their accounts/sticking to their own groups.

THIS IS CRAZY TRUE OMG, on my blog i was talking abt how chainsaw man is boiled down to a gooner show while the moral is that there has to b a connection to have intimacy, in the anime a character literally tells him that AND in the manga he talks multiple times how hes been manipulated to do stuff by people that he meets
ITS VERY CLEARLY STATED LIKE TO SOME EXTENT YOU DONT REALLY NEED MEDIA LITERACY TO GET THE POINT
like its a mix of not having media literacy for sure but also i think a lot of people defintly like to stick w funny tiktok slop opinons over real meanings to stuff
