ai use REQUIRED in STEM class

i'm an engineering major and one of my classes has a project worth 5% of the final grade about making an ai generated music video. if you saw my last blog post, you know how much i hate ai, so obviously i don't want to do this project!

the project description is at the top of this post... idk how it will show up for you. i highlighted the parts i have problems with. i don't like group projects, especially ones where we have to write a song, but id much rather do it without ai!!! especially since it's a group of ten people, that makes it easier, and honestly it could be so much fun. 

i am THIS CLOSE 🤏to writing an essay five paragraph email to my professor! i want to tell her:

1. ai is unethical because it steals from artists and writers! it’s not creative or original, in fact it discourages creativity and originality, which is the opposite of what we should be doing as aspiring engineers. (i have two sources for this point)

2. it's TERRIBLE for the environment! your students will be LITERALLY BUILDING the future and we should be practicing sustainability, not contributing to 1 damaging the environment and 2 the normalization of something so damaging. (another two sources here)

3. ai is bad for your brain, it discourages thoughtfulness and erodes critical thinking skills! i know you want us to fact check the generated lyrics, but again, this assignment normalizes the use of and dependence on ai, which decreases critical thinking abilities. as people involved in education, we should be doing the opposite! (and another source :3)

4. i took a class w her last semester and it was great so i'll compliment her about that in the beginning, and at the end i'll suggest other types of projects to replace this one. that way it doesnt look so much like i'm just complaining to complain

am i too woke?? am i making a big deal out of nothing?
